is there anypoint in trying to reach max rank with a race?
In short: Yes.
Higher race rank will give you some benefits. The higher the rank, the more credits you recieve from missions given by that race, as well as access to more ships/stations at their shipyards. Many stations (and ships of course) are only available at specific race shipyards, so if you ever plan to build complexes or stations of your own you had better know which races sell the ones you want to use and have a high enough reputation. Also, higher rank will give you better/more deals on secondhand ship buys.
Additionally if you ever want to take assassination missions or capture ships from a race, having a high/max reputation can minimize the damage done to said reputation after doing one of these activities.
