Albion Prelude crashing always at same point in game - ID'd as manual trade issue.

My game seemed to be running fine to start with but im now 10 hours in and crashing every 5 to 10 mins.

Crashes happen any time, usually when im navigating menus, when they do my screen freezes and whatever music or sound or voice that is talking keeps repeating. And i have to ctrl alt delete, where xlbion prelude is not responding and i have to end task

I am using steam and i have checked the integrity of both terran conflict and albion prelude and they are fine. Also regarding ffdshow, i cannot find it with a search but have used windows media player, organise, options, dvd, advanced, to specify ffdshow not to work with X3AP.exe.

Please help, i love this game but i am very frustrated after a night trawling the forums for fixes with no avail . dxdiag report to follow.

It sounds like a driver or codec issue that rears its head when your system is a bit busy - either that or it could be a hardware-related issue. We will start with the easy stuff and work from there.

You have default generic MicroSoft driver for your USB audio. USB will normally use whatever audio driver is loaded so try to find a latest Win7 x64 brand-named audio driver either for your speakers or for the sound chipset on your motherboard (eg RealTek etc).

You have a huge codec list including Ffdshow (as you say you have dealt with - don't forget to disable for X3TC too) and also Cyberlink which can cause issues with X3. Uninstall any music/media players and codec packs (such as k-lite or CCCP etc) that you do not use or need.

Maybe try without any forced cpu overclocking in case it is a stress issue.

Which drive is your pagefile/swapfile on? There is not enough room for its max size on your C: SSD.

Use your motherboard monitoring tools to keep an eye on temperatures and voltages while playing X3 and see if there are any issues prior to freezes.

Good luck and tell us how you get on with that lot. If the problem is still there then run and post another DxDiag after the changes.

i have bose companion 5 speakers and couldnt find any drivers from bose. I have all my playback devices devices disabled except the bose audio device, so i didnt think i even used my onboard sound. But i am certainly not an expert when it comes to pc's.

This is almost the last thing in your Bose Speaker handbook under system requirements:

• A compatible 5.1 surroundsound decoder residing on your computer

At the moment you are probably using a default generic MicroSoft one. You might be able to get a better one with the appropriate bespoke driver for your onboard chipset - but it is not a big deal anyway. The main thing is to make sure that some other codec is not hijacking your system into their own decoder codecs that do not work well with X3.

You can do a sort of check: if when you start having issues and recover you also unplug your speaker USB connection and disable the device temporarily in Device Manager, does the now-silent game (you can enable subtitles) play OK or still freeze?

Thanks again for the quick reply. Heres the state of things now.

Before i changed anything i noticed my game started crashing/ freezing at the same point. I leave a factory on barren shore and head for the west gate, after about 10/ 15 seconds on seta i get a few kilometres away from the gate and the game freezes, mouse cursor and all. I have to control alt and delete and the game is not responding in the task manager.

Here is a list of the things i have tried to no avail

i uninstalled the following:

after rebooting and playing agian i get the same crash at the same time. I check my temps : GPU 42C, CPU 24C, system temp 37C.

Regarding removing the usb speakers when the game crashes, i tried this and the game did go from not responding to running after about 10 seconds and ran fine for a couple of mins with no sound(it did not crash, i just quit to try something else out).

I then quit the game and reloaded the same save with no speakers plugged in, but the game still froze at exactly the same point. When i leave the game not responding it sometimes starts running again, sometimes not. I have left it not responding for 10 mins before and it has started running .

Ah, a fixed-gametime crash. That is a different beast entirely. You can probably forget the speakers issues.

Look for a ship, Military/RRF big ship or a TL with a Station Kit onboard that enters the sector you are in (or your scanner range) at just about the time of the crash. You can also do a couple of checks:

1. Jump out of that sector before the crash is due and see if it still crashes with you OOS. I would guess probably not.

2. Send another ship of yours to look around the original sector while you stay OOS and look for the types of ship that I listed above, especially if they are acting strangely such as stationary, or just idling backwards and forwards.

Tell us what you find and we can give more advice.

sadly i do not have a jump drive i tried what u said though. I can fly in any direction and still get the freeze there doesnt seem to be anything unusual that comes into the radar at the time. The biggest ship is an m3. After leaving the game not responding for 5 mins it starts running and i fly around the sector. The biggest ship i c is an m7 boron military thresher and boron military hydra.

I have since then continued on exploring sectors in this region without any crashes, so fingers crossed. I still have the save in barren shore separate though and can replicate the freeze if needed.

There are some moments usually entering a sector through a gate or when im just about to exit through a get that i get a freeze for maybe 3 or 4 seconds, and i think it is going to crash again, but the game comes back to life. Weird . I will continue to play tonight when i have time, hopefully crash free

I conclude that it is either a corrupt save or there is a corrupt ship that enters or tries to do something in that sector at that specific time. If you have an earlier save and can avoid being in that sector over the period when it normally freezes then you may be able to avoid the corruption entirely. You can then have a bit more confidence that your saves do not include something that may crop up again later even if you do get the chance to play through it after waiting a bit on this save.

Good news that its not my system or game installation. I dont have any previous saves only one after the save i posted. I only managed to play for a short time last night and it seemed ok. But seems inevitable that it will re occur if its a corrupt save.

I dont really want to start another game as i have put a few hours into this one. Ten hours isnt alot for this game i know, but with all the freezes and game time i have lost with not saving, aswell as the time spent messing around with my computer, downloading drivers and flashing bios etc, its probably more like 30 or 40 hours.

I am going to have a bit of time to play today as i am off work, so i will report back later.

As soon as the supplied game save loaded I open the property list 'r', and gave the Mercury the 'none' command, I was then able to fly your Discover around it's current sector and out of the gate.

i've found the problem and can now replicate it in both my old save that you have in barren shore and now my new save . Not sure if i can fix it though . Here goes:

If you look back in my save and check out my property, i have a mercury doing a manual trade run with the best buys and sells locator. It is in ba la gi's joy i think. It is buying energy sells for the best price in that sector and is just about to dock at a power plant. As soon as it docks with the station, i i assume is buying the wares, the game freezes. After a few minutes left alone, the game unfreezes and the mercury has no orders.

Now in my new save every time the mercury buys e-cells in this sector the game freezes, again only for a few mins, at exactly the same point when the mercury docks with the staion.

I dont believe it freezes when selling goods, only buying. And have not tried it in any other sectors yet. I will let you know how i get on.

Hopefully it doesnt do it with sector and universal traders. The game will freeze every 30 seconds for a few mins.

think a have cracked it. Im sure you guys knew this but in case anyone else has the same problem, heres what not to do when manual trading:

DO NOT PUT A MASSIVE NUMBER FOR THE AMOUNT OF WARES TO BUY

my mercury has a cargo capacity of 10000 roughly, so when i do a manual trade and tell my mercury to buy exactly 10000, i do not get any freezes with the game.

What i was doing was being lazy and keeping my finger on the 9 key and telling the mercury to buy anything from 999999 to 99999999999999999999. Thinking the game would sort it out for you and buy the maximum amount your cargo can hold. It obviously does do this but in the process must do something else that was causing my game to freeze for a few mins.

edit: my mercury only has 3000 capacity but the numbers i used were still the same

Good news and a nice catch by the OP and Terre - don't worry about the save any more. It is a manual trade script error that only happens in certain trade circumstances - as you found out. I forgot all about the potential manual trade issue while I was concentrating on rogue TLs. Ah so many things for an old guy to have to remember ...

first things we tried didnt work but on the bright side atleast my computer has the latest drivers now and ive gotten rid of all those useless codecs
