I would like to know why in this day and age we still have to fly into things to pick them up. Any word on getting them in game?

Tractor Beams exists. You can buy them and buy factories that make them.

What you ask for is a transporter beam, which you can find in S&M, I believe.

Tractor beam in X is used to tow stations. Cargo pick up isn't possible.

There are a couple of Scripts and Modding options. CODEA has a cargo salvage ability, but it's limited to weapons the base carrier can use. Apricot has a system using the transporter device to beam cargo aboard. Finally, the MARS system has Goblins, which are fighter drones under auto-matic control, which can be set to automatically bring cargo to their mother ship, and even bring ships there if the mothership can dock ships.

Gives TL's a much wider purpose and a reason to own one if you aren't building stuff.
