Graphics Problem, Please Help!!!

Ok, So I used to play x3 Terran conflict a while ago on this very labtop, it worked perfectly, then I added a mod, and it screwed the entire thing up. since then I've had to completely re-format my computer, then go through a bunch of updates... not fun. Since all my data was cleared, I figured I'd play one of my favorite games... XTC... First, this computer wouldn't register it in the CD drive, so then I decided to use get it off steam with my code. It downloaded, but I had a small problem.. This -



When I start the game up, everything works perfectly, once i get to the title screen, I have about 2 seconds of normal, then this happens, about every 5 minutes things "Shift", It doesn't really effect game play, Its just really ugly, and annoying.

I figure its not a problem with the core files, because its a steam download, and I've downloaded it twice, I've searched the forums for the last two days and I've only found one topic similar to mine, but now I've lost it, and i didn't understand how it was fixed.

I'm afraid I'm having a hard time seeing what's supposed to be wrong in some of those images. However whole-screen jumping and "spikes" on models are both fairly typical of driver and/or hardware problems.

I know you've reinstalled twice anyway, but start by doing a Steam file verification in case the download isn't quite right. Next look at driver updates, in particular for your sound hardware for which your current drivers are rather old. Odd though it may sound, sound drivers can affect the display because they are involved in the playback of recorded videos such as those shown on the advertising billboards in the main menu screen.

If none of that helps then it's possible that the graphics hardware on your laptop is struggling somewhat, either due to heat or a fault. This is hard to confirm either way but is, unfortunately, possible when pushing laptop hardware to its limits.

... also you have 2 audio devices and drivers on the go at the same time, IDT and MicroSoft default. Disable whichever sound device and driver you are not using in Device manager, Sound Devices (right click on one to get the disable option).

For the fact that i have 2 audio drivers... Is there any special case that my computer needs 2 audio drivers?

Oh, and the problem, if not clear in the images, (they did turn out to be rather dark...) Is that all the ships, big and small have triangular holes in them, and the stations, and, so far the Split Mamba, all have errmm, triangular 2d (or very thin) protrusions of stretched graphics (Horrible on warp gates, and large stations like the EQ. dock, or Shipyard) , They aren't collision detecting, (running into them does nothing.) and occasionally occur to far off asteroids. I don't think it really has a physical effect on the game, (Making npc's not land, or anything) it just looks really ugly, and for some odd reason it bugs me... ALOT...
So I was hoping someone could help with the problem.

Edit - I lied. Sectors with large ships or station,s and traffic give me a lag spike about every 2-3 minutes.

"Is there any special case that my computer needs 2 audio drivers?" - Short answer - probably no. Get rid of the MicroSoft default device and driver and update the IDT one.

The display problems you are seeing really indicate a graphics issue. It really seems that either your graphics card is either not capable of keeping up with demand, is stressed by heat, is not getting the power it needs to do its job properly, possibly needs a different driver and/or set-up, or is using the wrong video codecs.

The lag spike as you call it is probably when you are accessing your pagefile from slow harddrive when you run out of actual RAM or RAM addresses available for the game. I assume that is 32 bit Vista so your graphics card is using some of your available RAM addresses for VRAM addresses and then taking shared memory for graphics too. The game could lose access to nearly half of your available RAM that way. Keep your harddrives unfragmented where possible to speed up access.

I'm sorry to say this but I really don't believe your graphics card is man enough for this game.

Notebooks aren't really designed for heavy game playing.

A quick look at the reviews of your card say that it is OK for less intensive games but has problems with some of the shader models.

I don't suppose you can lower the resolution any more?

I will try to low my res, but about a few months ago this game worked perfectly, Ill try it out now.

PS. This may all just be a lost cause, because of some startup issues, meaning, it took me an hour, and a system recovery to get this computer to start-up, I'll have to bring it to go get it checked out.

Nope, Everything's as low as it can, windowed, resolution, effects, everything, The game ran faster, but still had the same problem as before. Im starting to hate this computer, Im going to see how much money I can make to get a better one (or just refit the computer with better hardware)

Looks as though Im going to start looking for a job, I feel that I at least need $100 - $150 just for a good graphics card... Maybe Ill save up what I get and try for a good gaming computer.
