Pirate Question
How do you know if your Pirate rep has gone up as it does not show anywhere that I can see. I need to up my rep for the Goner plot.
You can't without enabling modify mode (that I know of).
Instead, look for missions offered by pirates.
If you look at the pictures of the people offering them, you will soon be able to spot which ones are pirates.
Fairly obviously, don't pick any missions which involve killing pirates (could be any combat mission except xenon invasion basically).
(edit) If you just need docking rights for one pirate station, look around nearby sectors for a hack station offer.

If I remember correctly station defence missions against pirates does not lower your rep with them, as the pirates you kill are counted as a different race by the game.
Also in pirate sectors most stations listed with an I (for independent I.E meaning pirate) will always offer missions from pirates.

It does.
As for the Goner missions, he wants to make it easier to follow the ship to Gaian Star.

Pirates are organized by Faction, but those Pirate Factions are not visible by the player and are "station based" as far as I know. (This doesn't include the Yaki or Duke factions.)
So, I've heard conflicting reports on Pirates spawned from Station Defense and Escort missions effecting the player's Pirate Reputation levels. In short, it really doesn't matter very much. Regardless of your standing, hostile pirate ships will always spawn, even from Pirate bases that are friendly to you. Pirates, as the name implies, will be pirates.
Those reputation levels can easily be raised by doing missions for Pirate NPCs and those NPCs can be anywhere, not just in Pirate bases. Looking at their character portraits can usually give you a good idea if they're a pirate or not. Also, if they want drugs, alcohol, slaves or want you to blow up a convoy, they're a Pirate. Pirates also love Squash mines, for some reason, and will ask you to scan ships in their sector so they can steal the wares.. obviously a Pirate mission.
Because generic Pirate Stations have their own faction levels, worrying about generic Pirate faction loss doesn't seem like a big issue. You can get any station hacked if you look around long enough for a Hack Station mission offered nearby.
Yaki and Duke factions are separate from the main Pirate faction and these are what you would normally treat as a Race faction, for the purposes of long-term gains to be had. (Access to generic Pirate IBL and PBG factories is nice, but you can still get those hacked as well as other Pirate Faction facilities.)

also if you have the means setting up a drug or booze (or both) complex is an easy way to steadily raise rep with pirates (a little slow though) as they are some of your best customers (unmarked ships of course besides duke's)
in my most recent game i havent done any missions for pirates but almost all of them are blue because i keep them high
