Mouse flight control stopped

Not sure if this goes there or troubleshooting but...
the toggle cursor mode button doesn't work even after closing the game and setting controls to default. I really liked using the mouse to control flight and I have run out of ideas since the mouse moves in game and I can click on items both in the cockpit (stations) and on menu items. Also right click still fires lasers.
I blame the cats.

It works if I start a new game... strange.

The game was young so not that much damage done.
