[AP] Viper M8 useage

Post by Andyrids » Sat, 10. Nov 12, 10:14

I have two of these now and for a test run gave them 50 Tomahawks, 20 mosquito's and FBL in rear each...

Set rear turret to missile defense and forward to attack my target with missile fire set at 70% and placed them both in their own wing and issued the command to follow me...

Ok so I am in the hub sector and its currently overrun with Xenon fighting with the Yaki I am sat at the North gate and all the action is to the South far enough away to give me plenty of breathing space...

My 2 Vipers jump in and promptly start firing off Tomahawks at the Xenon mostly the M5's though and not at the J or the Q's IS....

So I change the command to attack capitals off they go into the furball and promptly get chewed up... reload... set them to attack my target... same thing happens... I tried different combinations and none had the results I would expect from a missile frigate ?

To me there must be a correct combination of commands / configurations to get them to just jump IS and sit there firing off missiles at either my target or what ever I specify ?

Can anyone offer up some advice on the correct set up and commands for these Vipers please ?

If you are using the Viper's IS, I'm not sure why you aren't just having them jump in, missile barrage the capitals, and then jump out. That is the usual use for M8's. If you are looking for commands/setup to put M8's in a wing for IS combat where they are automated and don't need input, you are probably in for a disappointment.

The Viper has light shields even for an M8, there are better choices if you want to put them in the thick of the fighting. The Teladi M8 is probably best. Also, just expect to lose M8's from time to time if they are going to fight IS using auto-commands. Computer AI will never be as good as your own input.

If you are determined to use M8's in a wing instead of using them for barrage commands from a distance, I suggest setting them to attack all enemies. Then, in your own personal ship, kill enemy light fighters/escorts yourself as soon as possible so that the Tomahawks auto-target the bigger ships.
Enemies make you stronger, allies make you weaker.

Thanks for the response and info :-)

Yes I was trying to automate them to an extent... and after reading what you wrote I found the missile barrage command once I broke the wing up... I forgot that command was hidden away when in a wing, not had much to do with M8's until now so to speak other than blowing them up lol

So I experimented again (quite a few times) with just one... called it in like you said issued the barrage command and it did its job and then I jumped it back out... Its just a shame none of the missiles reached the target before getting shot down on all occasions and from different scenarios *sigh* ... Think I'm not going to bother with the M8's and just stick to M7M for that kind of thing afterall....

Oh there is an interesting little quirk with that M8 if you have the thing on follow me command and issue missile barrage most of them impact on your player ship !!! LMAO .... Didn't really notice much at first since the ship was taking incoming fire anyway it's not till I reloaded again for another "experiment" from a different position this time that I was absorbing some of the missiles (I was in a Tiger, maybe due to its size alongside the little M8 was the problem with that).
