I'm not sure, but maybe with a joystick? I don't use a joystick, so my mouse is my flight controller. When in cockpit/turret view, using the keypad to swivel my view, the mouse controls my ship's movements.

Wow... just had a go on X3-AP, (with a cockpit addon.) and it supports Track-IR - YES !!!!

Been wanting this for years!
