I love PBGs!

Post by radionotme » Sun, 3. Mar 13, 23:56

I just managed to get some PBGs for my Heavy Centaur, and Wow!
I'd read a few threads on here saying how great they were, and decided to try them for myself.
Took a while - I found a forge in loomanckastrat and found a station in the nextdoor sector to hack it from red to blue. Then I set up a space fuel factory (that's now become a 5 station complex given how profitable it is) nearby, to feed it. Parked a TS there and now I've got 6 PBGs up front on my main ship.

I took on an assassination mission, which was against an M8. He had some m4 escorts but a few wasps took care of them. My HEPT turrets took care of the incoming tomahawks that the M8 kept firing, then once I got close enough, I fired. BOOM! One shot kill!

A few more of these to while away some hours, while my complexes get me up to the 50 million mark for my first M7M of the game...

PBGs are definitely overpowered. :D Though, getting close enough to capital ships to lay waste to them can be perilous. But, if you find their blind-spot, they're toast too.

PBGs get multiple hits, due to their area of effect. (X3TC)

There are two views to this weapon. One is when you are in small ship and every NPC uses PBG. The other is you with PBG. For some obscure reason the first viewpoint is somewhat lacking fans.

Aye, PBGs are awesome. Except when everyone shooting at you has them and you don't of course ;)

Watch out for friendly dire incidents though. If you're ever of a mind to set up a fighter wing with them, I'll give you fair warning, half of them will have char-grilled the other half by the end of your first engagement :p

And short of a decent sized missile they're a great way to handle Khaak super clusters.

As with pretty much all weapons they look entirely different from opposite ends. What might be snickered at as a peashooter can look like a cannon with a little adjustment to the perspective.

Since I fly around in M5s a lot I try to keep my view of PBGs in the rear view mirror and fading fast.

In my own game, I don't use them. They're just too overpowered and easily exploitable by the player. True, they can be rare, but that's not enough of a dissuasion to me. If they were limited in number, like the PALC, I might think they were more balanced. But, then the NPCs probably wouldn't have them.

Best countermeasure I ever found for PBG-armed enemies?

Get a bigger ship.

M5 versus PBG = OMGWTFBBQ.

Panther versus PBG = mild annoyance before I splatter him all over the sector with my FAAs.

I have an Eclipse equipped with 8 of them (aptly named "Salamander) that I sometimes use for fun. I don't use them for normal combat because it feels like cheating. Rarity is never a substitute for balance.

I like to have at least 2 equipped to my personal fighter, but they only really see use when I have swarms of M5s or fighter drones to worry about. I did the whole 'equip eight of them and roast an M7 in seconds' thing when I first played TC. After 5 years my tastes are a bit more...'refined'. :p

I use them only in Yaki, Xenon and Pirate sectors, since they kill my HW and lag causes the shots to go through hostile ships without damage.

Hmm, I didn't expect so many people to be down on them, given previous threads I've read. What would the alternative be for a Heavy Centaur then?
I think I'm going to keep them for a little while yet though, I've been on the other end of them enough times that a little payback seems in order.
If they start to feel like an 'I Win' button, then I might swap them out though, although by that time I'll probably be ready for an M7 or have saved enough for my M7M.

Great alternative to PBGs for Centaur are CIGs in my opinion. CIGs work better against other corvettes and against capital things than PBGs do.

I love the PBGs, but they are true Fighter-weapons. Their range is so short that you MUST get into Infight to use them. It's fun to attack Qs with a 3*25-MJ-fighter though and toast it 'from below' (my personal record: 4 at the same time in 598 with an Eclipse 8) ).

In my opinion the Centaur is not a dog-fight-ship. You are better off with some distance-weapons. CIGs are good. But - to be honest - you will find much better M6 (or M6+) than the Centaur.

By "bigger" I really meant "better-shielded". Freighters tend to be fish in a barrel no matter what the pirate is using.

CIGs as mentioned above are a good mainstay choice for any M6. Personally I like PRGs in my Heavy Centaur (or Heavy Centaur Prototype) turrets as they can shred lighter targets without you so much as blinking. EBCs are also a good choice so you can keep your fire on target without draining your laser banks so much.

Personally I hate centaur. Bulky, slow, it causes heavy damage to your nerves.
I enjoy Katana and Dragon (not heavy) since they are fast.

The Teladi Tern Freighter can mount PBGs - give those pirates a taste of their own medicine!

^And that, my friend, is the very definition of a Q-ship.
