x3AP missile question

Post by Hippotastic » Thu, 21. Mar 13, 00:38

I decided last night to try my hand a capping. As I am new, I scripted in some missiles and started shooting at my intended target. It shot down ever damn one of them. I tried a variety of missile, every one got shot down. Obviously a newb here.

hmmm

So today I did a review of a few guides on how to Cap, watched a video or two, thought, ok, got it, try again.

I just sat and shot 20 missiles at a gladiator ( I was not trying to cap it, it was an escort I wanted to get rid of) and he shot down every one of them. It seems I am not able to land a missile.

what have I missed?

All AI ships with turrets have missile defense as a priority. Hence missiles are good as a distraction (as long as they shoot missiles they don't shoot you ;-) ) but not good for capturing.

When I use missiles, I generally expect 25~50% to get through unless I'm using swarming missiles. Hurricanes, Thunderbolts, etc. get through individually but I get a better hit ratio with swarming missiles (obviously).

I use missiles almost exclusively with the Cobra. When i fire 10-20-30 hammers at some big boy, i always try to cover them with flails, because they are faster. If you time it right, the target will be busy trying to shoot the flails and more hammers will hit. At least that's how it works for me.
However, if the enemy has AOE weapons, then the chance to hit it with missiles drops down considerably.

AOE Area of Effect?

This that blow up and create a blast radius?

Hmm I saw that with my first target; the Gladiator just shot all my missiles and told me to p* off. Nothing like the tutorial VIDEOS I have watched.

Hmm need a rethink.

And a related question if I may, how do you target missiles aimed at you apart from trying to pick them out and click on them whilst they are flying to blast you to little itsy bits. I can see them half the time let alone shoot them.

It's tricky in a vanilla game but if you have one key assigned to target nearest (or next) enemy it will eventually lock on a missile.
