How does OOS combat happen in X3 TC/AP - the latest state ?

Post by unity100 » Thu, 30. May 13, 17:42

i read in forum threads that how oos combat happens was changed recently. but no thread explains it in good detail. in the threads which some info exists, you cant tell which game version it is valid for. leave aside that whether the last patch changes anything again.

can anyone tell me how oos combat happens in detail ?

Capital ships now return fire. When something attacks a capital ship, it automatically gets damage.

Practically, if anything even touches a capital ship, it gets instantly destroyed, no matter if it´s a swarm of 200 novas or a corvette or M5. So if you want to destroy a capital ship, you have to get another even stronger capital ship.

This is partially useful for player, because if you want to clear a sector, example a pirate sector, send there your capital ship and hit SETA, after some seconds the sector will be a ghost town.

Somebody correct me if Iam wrong, because Iam not sure about this. But it definitely works, as I tried this. I also don´t know when did they change it, back in X3TC I never fought OOS, and I bought X3AP when it was at 2.5.

So a wing of say 50 M3's would be vaporized in a single turn? So long dreams of owning a remotely useful M1...
Sure glad I didn't purchase a new computer this release.

My Griffon and escorts engage capitals all the time. I don't see my wings of fighters beig vaporizes at all. They actually survive quite well.

Mind you I don't use any m4 or m5 as those DO die quite fast.

how does combat happen then ? what role do weapon sizes, recharge rate, weapon energy, shields, shield recharge rate etc play ?

Weapons...since in OOS combat they are insta-hit, just mount the biggest and the most powerful weapon available. There is no dogfight in OOS, ships just stand on place and shoot. Thus, the ship with highest overall damage wins. Also turret placement doesn´t matter, they simply shoot at all directions.

Example, a Kyoto has 14 gj shields, if you equip it with 24 PSPs and 24 M/A Launchers, which is the power of about 50 Photon pulse cannons, no capital ship can face it and win. Except another Kyoto, that would be a 50/50.
Also, weapon recharge doesn´t matter, in OOS ships have unlimited energy. But shield recharge time is quite important for long fights, however I´ve had no problems with my Megalodon, and trust me, nothing regenerates slower than that.

OOS combat is something like a Real time strategy, remember playing Command and conquer? No matter how small the unit is, it just can´t dodge incoming fire, and also there is no field of view, everything shoots any hostile at range.

thats very simplistic then.

someone had had posted in a forum thread in which this question was asked before, and said that the combat was made more 'fair' in one patch. do you have any information of that ?

I think your best bet to get any really good insider knowledge on this is to PM Gazz (an experienced S&M Moderator and combat etc Modder) with a link to this thread and ask him to comment if he will.

There was a bug in TC, if a ship had a mix of ammo and energy weapons, only the ammo weapons would fire.
Is this fixed in AP?

I believe it is, at least in 3.0. I tested it pretty hard without problems (both IS and OOS).
