X2 The Threat what exactly is speed modifier in joystick mapping?

When mapping the joystick, there is a speed modifier-hold mapped to button 6. When I hold this button in the game and move the joystick, the speed changes by itself from -10 when I pull back to +122 when I push forward, and it looks like it adds some roll when I move left and right. Also, the console on the hud changes to a highlighted or "greyed" console. What exactly is this speed modifier trying to accomplish? Any explanation would be appreciated.
