X3AP 3.0: Black Crystals from pirates? (spoilers)

Where exactly are these pirates pretending to be salvagers? What do the ships show up as?

From the conversation with 'Joe Bloggs', Gate Research Department when you get this part of the mission:

The only ones I've heard of recently are being hauled by Pirates posing as Salvage Crews, running from Maelstrom down to Gaian Star.

They start from te North gate in Maelstrom, and fly to the Pirate Stock Exchange in Gaian Star. If they're destroyed/dock then a new one will start from Maelstrom after a few minutes until enough crystals have been collected.
The are called 'Pirate Salvage Crew Caravel'.

if you com the pilot during combat they usually drop more than you need for the mission
killing them = less drops
