X3TC, X3AP sound/voice problems (cut outs, popping noises)

Hello, I'm having a problem with speech and subtitles cutting out abruptly during gameplay (most notably during docking at stations). Here's a detailed description:

A guaranteed way to induce this problem is to dock at any station selling any goods, open a trade dialog, select any item from the list and press U to bring up the details page about said item. The voice starts to read the description, but stops abruptly just after a few seconds. If there are subtitles enabled, the subtitle panel at the bottom of the screen immediately disappears as well. If there is a station announcement playing in the background, it usually stops playing as well. When the same speech is replayed again, the sound cuts out at a different part, or sometimes not at all.

Another issue, which may or may not be directly linked to the main problem above is a brief "popping" noise in one or both stereo channels, occurring always right after a music or a voice stops playing (for instance selecting New Game or Quit from the main menu, switching quickly between multiple targets, or when the voice cuts out prematurely as explained above).


I've tried basically every possible solution from dozens and dozens of topics around here that are at least remotely relevant to my problem, but it's still unresolved. Apart from the list below, I also tested the game separately on another Win 7 x64 computer (laptop) and a fresh Win XP installation in Virtual Machine, all with the same results.


Things I've tried so far:
- reinstalling X3TC+AP from scratch
- checking game integrity in the Steam client
- reinstalling DirectX
- disabling and reenabling WMP 12 in Windows control panel (which is probably closest thing to a WMP reinstall on Win 7)
- testing various windows sound output configurations (2.0, quad, 5.1, 7.1), I use 2.0 (headphones) as my primary output.
- switching to realtek on-board sound card (with up-to-date drivers installed) and back to SB Audigy
- installing and uninstalling various codec packs (including CCCP, K-lite c.p., Shark007 codecs, Media Player codec pack)
- thorough testing and adjusting of codecs used by the game with DShow Viewer tool and DSFMgr (only one minor issue reported by DShow, probably unrelated: SPEECH section is showing that WMAudio Decoder DMO is used (which is shown red -> not preferred), instead of WMSpeech decoder DMO, but that's probably just Win7 naming issue)
- running the game in various Windows compatibility modes
- running the game with various graphic and sound settings (low/high details, EAX on/off)
- switching the game language from english to german
- converting the audio stream file (00144.dat) to different formats, including mp3, wav and wma in various bitrates and modes (this didn't help with the issue in any way, the only difference I noticed was that with some converted files, the sound was cutting out even faster and more frequent)
- loading the audio file from a different disc

Hello, well you have been very thorough except in one main area. Your Operating System needs Service Pack 1 and any other outstanding Windows updates to be installed.

You can certainly update your AMD graphics driver to Catalyst 13.4 from AMD here.

I would disable (if not actually remove) that old SB soundcard and enable your RealTek onboard sound chipset in Device Manager, sound devices. Update to the latest RealTek Win7 x64 High Definition Audio Codec driver from the RealTek site here which is probably R2.71 of 8 April 2013. There is no cpu penalty in using onboard sound now with the multi-core cpus offloading drivers to other cores than the main exe core. RealTek onboard sound quality is very good now.

If you have already updated your AMD graphics driver, you may also need to disable the AMD HDMI sound driver that will have been installed as part of the update.

I would also free up a lot more space on your harddrive and defrag it (if not an SSD) as otherwise the pagefile space will be fragmented.

When all that is done, if the problem persists then work through the things that you have listed in your post above again. Good luck.
