What's your favourite missile?

Post by IanFitzJo » Wed, 2. Oct 13, 14:29

I have 3 - firestorm torpedoes, hornets and hurricanes.

I love how I can fire 4 or 5 firestorms at a Q, (more, obviously, for Js and Ks) from 30km away and they just keep going. The distance shots seem to reduce the odds of the Q doing successful missile defence, as well.

Hornets for close-quarters combat with Xenon cap ships, and hurricanes for showering their escorts.

What works for you?

Im not great with missiles but what I have liked alot is.

Spring blossom with Spectre missiles. They are like a upgraded hornet. Against a big targer you can make a huge number of these hit within a short period of time from different angles. This with the good damage and range makes them effective for springblossom hit and runs.

Now Ive been using a panther and Tiger Im liking a mix of Hornets and firestorms. Firestorms have a huge range so you can start your attack on a big target from accross the sector and do great damage against it. Hornets are fairly versatile. They are just fast enough to take out alot of m3s (and do so in one hit mostly). In numbers they make the difference in a fight between big ships.

If I had to pick one missile it would be the Hornet. I would make full use of a million of them if I had them.

Tornado - fast, unguided, anti-capital, swarm missile which fires it's warheads sequentially (rather than simultaneously as most swarm missiles do). Takes 2 seconds to launch all 8 warheads which is the same as it's cooldown. Consequently when using them I tend to treat the missile launcher more like a machine gun than a conventional missile & fly strafing runs along the length of the target unleashing a continuous hail of 50k warheads as I go.

Also Tornado is a lot less hazardous to my own health than using other high yield missiles (Firestorm, Hammerhead, etc) in close proximity to the target. If an individual Tornado warhead is prematurely detonated by incoming fire the consequences tend to be lot less fatal - much lower yield & blast radius.

Poltergeist missile is fun. I used to use it back in X3TC at the beggining when I salvaged some pieces.

Nice answers! Thanks, guys.

I have to admit I am also rather fond of Spectres, thelastslaith. I could never have finished Final Fury in my Osaka without them and they’re a crucial part of my gate-guardian Osakas’ load-out.

I have Tornados, Grey Area, I just haven’t figured out how to use them properly. They’re just point and shoot aren’t they? I presume that means I have to be head-on to my target and hope he doesn’t turn out of the way? I definitely take what you mean about the Firestorms though, if they blow while you’re anywhere near them, they do put a big dent in your shields.

While I tend to use missiles fairly heavily, I don't really have a single favorite. That said, there are a number of them that I tend to gravitate towards. Among the missiles I always carry aboard any bigger ship (M6 or larger) that I'm flying are mosquitoes (missile defense, obviously), hornets, typhoons, wraiths (if I'm flying my Hyperion), and firestorms.

I also tend to start hoarding hammerheads early on, even if I don't yet have a ship that can fire them. Once I've got a ship that can use them, they tend to be handy for assassination missions.

I'm not that far into the game so I haven't really gotten to play with ship killers and torpedoes, but my current favorite missile for early game is the Thunderbolt. It's got a ridiculous range (78 km) and at 195 m/s it goes significantly faster than any of my combat ships, so I use them for assassination missions. Jump in, find the target at a different gate, fly into range, fire a few missiles, wait, explosion, jump back, profitssss. It usually only takes one to do an M3, but they're cheap so it's worth it to send a spare or two. Cuts several minutes off the time to do those missions in a slow ship.

Pretty much, however Tornado is bloody fast for a high yield missile (312m/s) so if fired from close range gives the target very little time to either evade or shoot down the missile.

Tends to be more than a 'big dent' in my case. Favourite ships are all M6s & generally not the ones with heavy shielding either. Current game I'm mostly flying a Heavy Dragon (the quad PBE turret is really handy for capturing & boarding ops). It's great ship, really fun to fly, but with only 600MJ shields you really don't want to be anywhere near a Firestorm when it goes off - tends to be a little bit fatal.

I did the same for Final fury at the time I only had like 20mil and enough rep with each race to get a m6. so springblossom Loaded with tiny pea shooters and Specters doing bombing runs.

I find that the long range of some missiles is a total draw for me. It just adds a level of tactic rather than having to be within 6km to fight anything.

are Hammer Heavy torpedos any good? I built a fab for the Yaki and so Im buying them on the cheap and I don't know if I should find a ship to use them or just make profitsss

Tomahawks. Good range, big warhead, auto-target switching.... what's not to love?

Any one of my Xenon defense force (exterminator force?) M8 bombers can stop a Xenon invasion dead in its tracks. It's funny to see a J or K jam on the brakes and try to turn and run when it sees 16 Tomahawks coming.

X3 AP:

For M7s Launch 6 or 7 Typhoon than a couple of hammerheads or 5 Firestorms when I feel "lucky", otherwise Hornets, if the target is close, I use wasps instead (just to confuse the towers), for M2 or M7 at close range Tornados.

So in a nutshell, Tornados, Typhoons, Firestorms and Hornets ;)

Definetely the specter missile is my most favourible.

I use specters in springblossum to take out multiple Q's whilst using the turbobooster mk.1 because im 630 m/s the missile launch at a very wide angle confusing the missile defenses and boom, boom, boom down goes 3 Q's

When im in my hyperion i use hornets to quickly get rid of m6's.

Im only half way through the hub plot. I plan on making 1 giant complex comprised of 10 of ever missile factory and self sustaning.

Is it possible to link terran stations with commonwealth ones??

Another vote for the Tornado. You can also completely foil missile defense systems when firing it strictly as a dumbfire by de-selecting any target. Matters a lot in AP since most capitals can shoot down most of whatever else I throw at them unless it is in a barrage.

As already mentioned, Wraiths are just plain ungodly if used in a particular way: start from considerable distance away, fly towards your enemy, and launch them one after the other. They'll end up bunching together and will completely overwhelm missle defense systems. That being said, I only ever really used them on the Terran M7s since it otherwise takes an age to kill a big ship.

Finally, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Tempest yet. I actually vastly prefer them to the Thunderbolt. Even though it has a smaller ordinace, the range is also excellent and it has identical speed. The bonus is that they retarget after a ship goes down, so I can justifiably throw out over-kill on individual targets and not have to worry about waste. Or put another way, I have to futz with selecting targets a lot less while the enemy is closing in.

They're excellent, but require an M7M to use. They're also the only heavy-duty option for M7Ms, so whether or not you use them depends on whether or not you want to adopt a particular play style.

Preferred missiles? Hornet and Firestorm only if used on a Xenon I.

-Wraiths
-Typhoons
-Tempest/Thunderbolt (depends if im launching them or not)
-Silkworm
-Hurricanes

For Mining a single Hornet will crack open an asteroid to chop into smaller pieces.
Twenty Silkworms won't do that.

This is a great thread about missiles. Missiles need more love.

I use hornets almost exclusively. Starting to use typhoons a bit more (now that I have a few typhoon factories attached to my Teladi weapons plex).

Hornets - I will go through about 10 of them taking down a Q in my Hype. I have about 800 in my HQ so I'm fairly frivolous with them.

Wraiths - I would love to figure out how to use them. I think I tend to launch them when I'm too close to my target ship. They are really slow, get shot down around me causing me shield damage. And in the end only one or two of the warheads connect... Some tips would be much appreciated.

Wasps - I use them to fire and forget about M4 and 5s.

Typhoons - I use them against M3s, M6s and sometimes M7s.

Hammerhead and Firestorms always get shot down I find so unless someone tells me how to use them I will continue to stockpile them for my Xenon I, which I am preparing to take down a xenon sector...
