Free Play primary weapon doesn't hurt

I started a free play and jumped right after some pirates. The missiles did damage properly but my primary weapon does no damage. I get audio responses from them like I'm attacking them but shields or hull didn't change.

Please verify your Steam gamefiles cache as we are not seeing any other reports of this issue. See first bullet here. Also make sure you are in range!
