Illumination

I'm at a loss. I can't seem to wrap my head around UV mapping, and to be frank I'm not entirely sure that's where I'm going wrong.

I see custom ships with glowy effects, animated textures and - just plain old illuminated windows ect. I cant for the life of me figures out how to do this in 3ds max .

Im not asking for a step by step, just a link to the material I need to be learning. I did search and I'm still just as lost because I have no idea what Im actually looking for.

well after baking for a while, I cant get the glow at all. The star trek models have that however I'm clueless show to make it work for what IM doing.

Guess I'll work on other stuff in the mean time
