[x3:AP] Performance issues, especially with khaak weapons

[clunatic]

I've been playing a game of AP (steam version) for several weeks now using the TC storylines in AP mod and I've noticed a gradual slowdown of things, especially scrolling through menus and using seta stuff like that. Worse though is the problems I get whith khaak weapons. If there are more than a few khaak ships shooting at the same time the game slows to just a few fps, making it completely unplayable.

I've already tried setting all my graphic setting to the lowest settings, but that hasn't made any difference for the menu and seta problems, and only a small difference with the khaak weapons (problably because lower view distance means less ships shooting at the same time?).

Anybody have any ideas what the problem could be? The game ran fine at highest settings in the beginning, but now, especially the khaak problems, have just made it unplayable...

Hello. It is always worth verifying the Steam gamefiles caches for X3TC and X3AP separately as a first step.

I suspect your issue is perhaps sound-related (probably the multiple overlapping weapon sound effects) and could be due to that old and generic Microsoft sound driver you are using for your onboard RealTek sound chipset. Get the RealTek HD Audio Codec R2.75 for Win7 x64 dated 21 May 2014 from here and see if that helps. Good luck.

I don't really know what else to suggest since your game is modded. I assume you have asked in the relevant S&M thread to see if others using the mod have these issues? You never know, perhaps this is exactly why there are no active Kha'ak in vanilla X3AP!

Is the sound stuff (the multiple weapon sound effects) a common problem? Maybe I could mess around with my sound settings or maybe replace the khaak weapon sound files with other generics ones? I am not sure. It could be just the firing and hitting sound effects, or it could be the beam and hit graphic effects. The S&M denizens and moderators would know more. I did find some similar issue threads, not that they help much:

As for the lags when scrolling through menus, there's a known bug with AMD graphics cards and drivers. User dome123 describes in this topic how that can be fixed.

As for the performance impact of beam weapons, as Alan already mentioned, there can be various reasons. This mod by F.A.B. changes their look (installation is a bit complicated, but described in the topic) and should also improve the framerates, when using beam weapons (like the Kyon Emmiters).

As for the general slowdown, a possible reason could be the creation of too many ships in your universe. There actually has been a similar bug (known as "Billion Barracuda Bug") that was fixed with X3AP update 2.5.3. I can imagine that the combination of the TC storylines in AP mod plus other mods could cause something similar (i.e. the creation of too many ships or a missing clean up of ships being no longer used). For the Billion Barracude Bug as a temporary solution I wrote this script destroying all no longer used ships in the universe. You could try it out (backup your saves before) and see whether it changes anything.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I did already try the fix dome123 posted in that other thread. It made no noticable difference for me.

I've also tried your script, that also made no difference.

I think I'll just suffer through the problems and do the final fury missions by flying very far away from any enemies ships and then jumping in a m7m to deal with them. The general slowdown, while annoying, isn't gamebreaking.
