X3R - Many errors right at the start

Post by Grandcheapskate » Thu, 14. Aug 14, 20:11

Just purchased X3:Reunion 2.0 in the retail package. A couple issues I am having right off the bat.

First, let me give some specs. I just did a clean install of Windows XP SP3 to a P4 1.5gHz PC with 1gb of memory. The machine has two hard drives, both of which were formatted just before installing the OS. The C drive is a 6g which is only used for the OS. The second drive (D) is an 8g used only for X3:Reunion testing. There is no other software installed and the machine has no internet access.

First, there is no manual of any kind, either printed or on the DVD. Despite being marked as new, I think this may have been a returned game. I'm beginning to believe someone bought the latest version of the game (with the Bala missions) and then returned the game with an older DVD. The older DVD probably came with a printed manual which is why there is none with my DVD. If I really had the newest copy, why is there no manual on the DVD? And if there is a manual, where is it? There are no PDF files on the DVD or hard drive.

Second. The shortcut to the readme file on the start menu points to a readme file with a 1.4 name. This link doesn't work as there is only a readme2.0 file on the HD. How can such an obvious error be possible?

Third. I run X3.exe and get the splash screen. I select "start X3" and immediatly get "X3.exe has encountered a problem".

I have run a complete diagnostic and it found no errors.

So, what is going on?

Thanks.

Here's the first problem: Your PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements, which mention a processor (P4 or equivalent) with at least 1.7 GHZ. And that is really the bare minimum, as X3 is a CPU intensive game. Based on your other system specs with, for today's standards, very small hard drives, I would assume that you have a graphics card installed that may also not meet the system requirements. If you tell me what graphics card you have installed, I can give you a more accurate answer.

The X3: Reunion DVD 2.0 version (published by Deep Silver in Europe) has a .pdf manual included. It is called "X3Manual.pdf" and is located within the game folder with the default location being C:\Program Files\Egosoft\X3 Reunion. However, you seem to have the US version of X3R, which was published by a different publisher (Enlight Software), so they might not have included a manual. In that case, you can download the manual from our Downloads section.

Admin...I had posted a lengthy follow-up response. Did I mess up and not submit it or was it removed?

If it was me, let me hit the high points...

Yes, the disks are small but this was just to test X3 and nothing more. For that purpose, the disk sizes are fine.

The video card is a GeForce2 MX/MX 400.

I know the processor speed is .2gHz under the minimum, but for a simple test to see if the game will start, it shouldn't be a problem.

To not supply the manual in any form, and to not even mention a manual exists, is simply unacceptable. I understand this is the fault of the publisher (Enlight), but consider the impression people get of your company is directly related to their first experiance. Whether the missing manual, invalid shortcut or bad/missing CDs is the fault of the publisher or developer, the buyer is going to lump them together when evaluating whether to ever buy from either again. To open a new retail boxed game and find nothing but a reference card and DVD is very frustrating. Especially when you can't know anything until you buy the game and get on the forums.

Well, I was not critizing the disk sizes. ;) I was just making an assumption about your graphics card based on the given pieces of information about your PC. And I was correct, your graphics card doesn't meet the minimum system requirements either, which is why you won't be able to run X3 with your PC.

As for the manual, of course it is disappointing that they didn't include the manual at all. But as you mentioned already, it is not and never was in Egosofts hands to decide what goes into the box. Everything Egosoft can do, and does already, is providing the manual for download for those who don't have it or lost it. Fortuantely, when you click on the "Search for updates" button in the X3 starter, you're redirected to the Egosoft homepage, where you can find the manual and further help about the game in our forums and FAQ database.

Thanks for the reply.

I have not installed any post-Win95 games although I have a lot of them - time just hasn't permitted me to do so. I opened and installed X3 because the retail package felt way too light and I thought it might be empty. Then I got on the trail of the manual. So my experiance with "modern" games, their requirements, and how they handle errors, is nearly non-existant even though my background is in mainframe computers.

So let me see if I understand correctly. If I do not have the correct video card, I do not get a "nice" error, but rather an error which appears to be a program crash? And the test run from the diagnostic program won't show me I have a video card that doesn't meet the requirements (because that program showed my video card as working fine)?

Thanks...Joe

Please post a fresh DxDiag for your system (instructions here) and then we can see whether your system is suitable or not, and whether there is anything you can do to perhaps allow the game to run.

Thanks for the interest. Below is a copy of the DxDiag report. I fully understand why this machine may not be able to run the game fully, but I don't understand why it should crash before the first screen even appears. If the program knows there is an issue, a controlled "shutdown" would seem to be in order - especially at the start. A "crash" should only be the result of a bug.

Again, I only installed the game to (a) look for the manual and (b) take a quick peek.

And don't forget about the error off the START menu where my 2.0 game tries to locate the readme1.4.rtf file. I can fix this, but it should never have made it to final relase.

Thanks...Joe

Sorry, with that inadequate cpu speed and worse your graphics card lack of video memory and capability - not helped by having the absolute minimum of physical RAM so that the graphics card has no shared memory either - your system will not run nor probably even start X3R due to display issues. You can read the manual on the drive though.
