Random Crashes - fixed by driver update.

Post by uncle esteban » Thu, 1. Jan 15, 15:00

Hi. First off, when this game works it is awesome! Problem is that this is the second time I've tried running x3tc with the exact same results. Basically the game crashes without any reason I can see. I can be flying alone, in a huge battle, docking or changing sectors when the game will do one of several "kinds of crashes." Sometimes the game will freeze & I will have to shut the game down thru task manager. Other times the game freezes but I have to do a hard reboot or the game freezes with a loud buzzing sound with the same results. Or I get a black screen & nothing happens for awhile & I'll try to shut it down thru task manager but x3 won't close & I have to shut my system down & restart. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this. I can play for 5 hrs straight without a problem but there are times I can't play more than 5 min's before a crash. Here is what I use:
Dell Lattitude E6400
win 7 pro
intel core2 duo 2.66 ghz
4gb ram

I just rechecked Steam's listed requirements & my system is strong enough to run the game. Please help.

Hello. We would love to help but only if you allow us to do so by giving the information we need (such as whether modded, your DxDiag and any useful error reports, etc).

More information and help for this, as always, is in the Stickies above on information needed, and on common problems and resolutions.

Always start off by verifying your gamefile cache (for X3TC in this case) with Steam game issues.

I play a non modded version of the game. Too scared to mod such an unstable game. I'm not sure how to get the reports you need. To be honest I have seen that the problem I described is not an unusual one since I have seen too many posts describing the same problems as I have experienced dating back to 2000. I am both shocked & disappointed that there are no patches I could find to help resolve this. Sorry, but I am not a programmer nor am I interested in becoming one. I bought this game off Steam & expected that it would work as long as the listed system specs were met. My system does so the game SHOULD work. There was no disclaimer listed stating that game may not work even if requirements were met:
Steam:
OS: Windows 7, Vista SP1, XP SP2
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo or AMD® equivalent at 2.0 GHz
Memory: 3 GB RAM
Graphics: 256 MB 3D DirectX 9 Compatible video card (not onboard) with Pixel Shader 3.0 support
Hard Drive: 10GB of free space
Sound: Soundcard (Surround Sound support recommended)

Mine:
Dell Lattitude E6400 os win7 pro
intel core duo2 2.66ghz
4.00 gig ram

The one thing I'm unsure about is my graphics card but I would have expected pretty messed up looking graphics or the game not to boot up at all if my card was no good. Instead the game looks great, even compared to some of today's games.

Sorry if I seem a little angry but let's face it, as a customer all I should have to do is download the game & play, not try to figure out what the bugs are.

Read the instructions on running the dxdiag report. I'm guessing that I should run that after a crash so I'll send it once the game crashes again.

Updated X3TC is in fact a very stable game; just not so much on your current system and set-up. That is why we want to know about your system to see what is different in your case. Just run a DxDiag and post it here. Your system hardware, OS, drivers and software do not change when you crash.

The error reports from the crashes you have already had are stored in your system. The FAQs linked in the threads I gave you above tell you how to find them without you needing to be a techie at all.

Just paste the relevant text bits of any related X3TC reports and we can hopefully see what your system is objecting to.

Good hunting!

I will say this much thus far: you guys are FAST!!! Thank you for the quick replies, best customer service experience for that reason alone!

Ok, so I played for roughly 4 hours, leaving the game going idle for an hour for a store run, came back & played for about another hour. At the time of the crash I was on a retrieval mission & I had just entered the sector my target ship was in. Game froze & the music would play for 10 sec's before "skipping back" to what it had already played. Went to task manager, saw x3tc.exe not responding & could not get a mouse pointer on screen. Had to restart my system to resolve mouse. Here is the dxdiag I ran after restart:

Really hope this helps. In all honesty, I would be ok with the game crashing every 3 or 4 hours, that's how much I enjoy it! It's when this happens more often. Thanks again for the quick help.

Thanks.

The first issue is that you are playing X3 on a fairly oldish onboard graphics chipset with little VRAM when the game really needs a dedicated card as it says on the game specs (usually a Nvidia or AMD mobility card for a laptop). Even then, a serious issue is that your graphics driver is from 2009 and will not be optimised for Win7 x64 SP1. See if you can update that from your system manufacturer's site.

Next your IDT sound driver is from 2010 and again should be updated; either from the system manufacturer's site or better yet directly from the IDT update site.

Lastly you have the Win7 x64 OS yet are holding it back a bit by only having 4 GB RAM. Your graphics having little VRAM puts added pressure on use of what RAM you have as shared graphics memory. A memory expansion could well help with problems happening after playing a while and using up available caching. Might be a problem expanding it with that Dell laptop though.

Your codec list looks clean and good!

Now, how about the error reports in Event Viewer (if any)? You should not have to put up with *any* crashing on a suitable system, no matter how far apart it happens, given the stable condition of the current game!

PS. This forum is really for the player-base to self-help where possible. Most of the forum officials here are just X game players who volunteer to help out on-line. If you are lucky enough you may get a passing Egosoft Developer join in and try to help you though.

Thought I had updated all my drivers before but somehow missed my graphices...thank you :) According to the message I get my sound drivers are the most up to date available. Doing this thru a windows search to the internet. Will see how this works now that I know for sure the graphics driver is updated  Thanks again.

Nice. I'll try that a little later today. Just wanted to hop on & say thanks for the help. Game runs smooth as silk now, no problems for 2 days now. I even let the game run as I slept just to see if there would be a crash. Nothing. Now I'm going to try modding the game a little. I would love it if I can find Babylon 5 ships or the Millennium Falcon....thanks again guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
