Paranid Captial running rampant

Post by IceDown » Sun, 4. Jan 15, 03:29

Just started up a new game last night in AP. Planned on staying vanilla this time, but I've got a problem now. I'm in my original Buster and have a discover hauler picking up spoils, so I don't have much in the way of firepower or credits at the moment. The problem I have is that there is a Odysseus, Deimos, and Nemesis, with a few escorts running around in HoL shooting anything Argon. They have not targeted me yet, so my little hauler is making much profitsss of of them, but they will eventually wipe out Terracorp HQ, which will make things a bit more of a pain when it comes to getting my freighters up and running. I personally usually turn on the Paranid and wipe them from the universe at some point but just don't have that capability at the moment. Argon is not retaliating at all. Is there anything I can actually do about his? Without having wings of course.

Sector Invasions

Post by Bill Huntington » Sun, 4. Jan 15, 05:50

When you can afford a Viper or equivalent, you can blow them up with unattributable missiles and not even lose rep. When you have trained marines, you will beg for this opportunity. Until then, not much. Don't worry too much, the HQ will respawn in a gameday or so. Many times these kind of invaders don't press the attack all the way. Just gather, pilot.

These invasions are common, with Paranid vs. Argon, and Split vs. Boron. The corridor of sectors between Paranid Prime and HOL is one of their favorites.

There are a couple of options. The easiest and smartest is to wait. Eventually they'll either get bored, and wander off, possibly before bothering TCHQ, or the Argon will arrive and give them a smacking and send them on their way or blow them up, generating occasionally ludicrous amounts of loot. I'd prepare a couple of more freighters for that event. Don't even have to be especially fast ones, just with enough cargo space to pick up the goodies.

The slightly more dangerous option is to acquire a bomber. A buster is more than capable of taking down a bomber, provided you're a good enough pilot to get in close where they won't use missiles and knock them down. A couple salvos of your own missiles, carefully calculated not to do more than lower their shields works wonders. (Try Dragonflies.) The natural target? Paranid bombers, though probably not the ones in HoL or they'll pop your Freighters and you're then SoL. The Teladi Peregrine is also nice.

The final option, is the hilariously insane option, which is only truly possible in AP. Simultaneous boarding operations. Three TP's, three teams of marines. Missile launches to strip their shields, and board all three at the same time, then once the jarheads are in place, engage and destroy the escorts. Probably very unlikely to succeed, but worth a shot if you're desperate. Don't even have to be particularly good marines to deal with the three eyes.
