Best Layout and Tips how to use a Hyperion Vanguard? (TCv3.2)

Post by Fraggle Rock » Fri, 26. Jun 15, 22:35

Hi everyone :)

I usually buy M6's to use and I usually just give them HEPT's in the main firing window and stick PAC's in the turrets.

I get the feeling though that this ship is different and is capable of a lot more.

So please I would be very grateful for any advice on a better weapon layout for my new ship.

Also I'd be very grateful for suggestions on some great things to do in this X3TCv3.2 Universe with my new acquisition.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks :)

The Hyperion is a good mission ship. Dock a speedy M5 (M cargo) with freight and mineral scanners, and life support. Dock your favorite M3 fighter for those times the fighter would be more appropriate than the M6.

If you are friendly with the Pirates, some PBGs are worth picking up. Many players will say PBG as the only choice for them. CIGs are harder to find than HEPTs, but do more hull damage. They also toss smaller ships around with could cause aiming issues. I prefer the CIGs over the 3 guns, but you'll find proponents for each.

You have an option on the front turrets of HEPTs to increase attack strength or PACs to aid in fighter and missile defense. Rear turrets are definitely PACs.

Missiles are determined mostly by what you expect to be fighting. Mosquitoes for the MDM, Wasps or Hurricanes for speedy M5s and M4, Dragons and Silkworms for M4s, Silkworms and Thunderbolts for M3s. Thunderbolts in numbers and proper fire control can also be effective against M6s and better. As far as bigger targets, Typhoons, Hornets, Firestorms Torpedos and Wraiths.

I tend to use missiles that I can build or those that equipment docks and military bases/outposts stock regularly.

Thank you ancienthighway,

I really appreciate your advice.

Time to really get deeper into the game and acquire some different missiles and do some Pew Pew.

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

I'd personally go for the Tempest over the Thunderbolt. While it does a bit less damage, that's more than made up for by its ability to retarget if the initial target is destroyed. This allows you to spam a bunch of them at the closest target, and once that's destroyed, the other Tempests will automatically seek out the next target. This goes on until either all targets are destroyed or all missiles used up. This makes fighting packs of M3's and M4's a whole lot easier. What I'll typically do is take out any M5's with Hurricanes (I find Wasps too short-ranged, personally) and then turn and run while spamming Tempests at the nearest M4/M3. I've taken out a whole sector's worth of Xenon fighters in this manner.

Also, an alternate ship loadout for the Hyperion is just a single, fast scout. I like to keep the extra slot open for picking up fighters I've forced to bail, unless I have a TM handy to do the collecting. In Xenon sectors, that's often a bad idea, so being able to claim and pick up a bailed fighter before that Q, J, or K gets to you is a real advantage. :) :D
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

The ship has several strengths:

- large cargo hold
- compatibility with a LOT of weapons (Plasma Burst Generators, Tractor Beam) and missiles (Wraiths, Firestorms)
- it's very fast for an M6 (and can be made faster with Pandora Crates)
- it's very maneuverable for an M6, you can almost dogfight in it
- can dock 2 fighters or scouts

Basically it has so many strengths that it's regarded as "overpowered" by many.

The large cargo hold lets you carry spare shields and spare weapon loadouts, many kinds of missiles, and enough energy to afterburn for hours. The weapon compatibility lets you switch from standard M6 fare (ISR + PAC turrets) to crazy (8 plasmas and hiding in a blind spot = dead capital ships). Boost its speed a little bit with Pandora crates and you can do an "I'm dragging missiles" flyby, where you fly by the target and then all your Wraiths that you previously launched hit it all at once. You can easily complete "bring me back my abandoned M3 / M4 / M5 ship" mission, "bring me xxx ware" missions, "personnel transport" missions, etc. You can easily mine asteroids; manually flying your ship through the rocks is much faster than assigning 4-6 TS transports to the task, and the cargo hold is pretty good for mining nividium in UFJD sectors.

I have mine boosted to 270 m/s speed and 8 RPM turning, and can easily dogfight it (I can turn the ship sufficiently to aim the main guns at M3/M4 targets). I've docked a Kestrel for exploring and an Advanced Perseus with EBC and PBE's for capturing small ships and for "fair" dogfights.

The other day I wanted a Blastclaw Prototype, and I found one, but it had 4 buddies with it, and I wanted to maintain my standings with the pirates in order to continue buying their plasma burst generators for a while longer. So instead of killing the escorts before capturing the Prototype, I collided my Hyperion with them, which resulted in minor standings loss (10 pts each). When only the Prototype was left flying, I undocked the Adv. Perseus and captured him with that.

The Hype - a great ship!

Post by Bill Huntington » Sat, 27. Jun 15, 02:17

The Hype is worth every effort and expense to acquire. I use it as my personal ship for the rest of the game. The Poisoned Paranid start lets you overtune it, but it's a fine ship without overtuning. My usual weapon loadout is 3 CIGs and 5 IREs, PACs in other turrets. I carry an extra CIG to use when I fight a Q or equivalent. Sustainable fire is the point. You could have all the slots with a big weapon, but run out of E quickly. I cap M3+ regularly so I keep IREs available.

The Kestral gets one hangar and gets used a lot. I carry an M3+ too, and use it occasionally; its main use is to carry an extra JD and other items. Sometimes I'll carry another ship. I just dock it and jump it out and jump out in the Kestral myself.

The Hype allows you to do most missions in TC and AP. It is excellent for fighting. I rarely use missiles. Just lasers is enough. I take Qs regularly though it takes some time.

Its 5 x 200 shields, speed, and its maneuverability lets it survive in hostile situations. A great ship!

Personally I like the Ion Shard Railgun over CIG.
And a few Pulsed Beam Emitters for stripping shields. Especially good combined with the boarding teleporter extention (a mod)

I usually keep it simple.

As it's used mainly against figthers and M6, full EBC for front - range is lower than for CIG or ISR, but can fire longer.

PACs all around - they can keep anything distracted (terminally) while I can concentrate on the mission objective.

Two ships docked - one M3 for capping, one m5 for scouting.

No preferred missile type.

When the mood gets me, I put ISRs front to do some M7 hunt.
