What should I know about mission director? (Yes, it IS the issue!)

Post by Space Traveller » Sun, 23. Aug 15, 16:49

Hello folks,

Unfortunately, my recent AP games have become almost unplayable....FPS are around 20 (gives me headaches after some time) and fights drop below 10. This is in no way fun and made me almost stop playing entirely.

After some research i've found some "workarounds" which involve to reset the mission director. I've tried it and oh couldn't believe the difference! Suddenly, everything was smooth again and fights stayed at high fps. It felt like a whole new game.

Now i feel like this is the exploit/workaround to keep my game alive. I don't mind ***modified** at all.

I am playing AP 3.1 with "TC plots for AP and IEX". Apart from that no other mods.

But now i have some questions about it:
1. If the mission director is indeed the cause for performance problems - is there a better workaround available today?
2. What exactly does the reset do? And what should i know about it if i use it?
3. If i just don't do any missions anymore...would the performance remain constant?

From what i've experienced and heard, resetting the MD leads to stations which have a mission icon, but don't offer missions. However i guess this problem solves itself after a few ingame minutes? (Or hours maybe) Also i've heard I should by no means reset the MD during plots - and first finish a plot completely before doing so.

Anything else i need to know about it? In the older threads i've found about that, the moderators more or less recommended NOT doing it - but like i said, my current savegames are *UNPLAYABLE* and doing so fixes that. So as long as someone gives me a better solution to this problems i'm stuck between using this reset (and all bad consequences which i don't know about yet) or not playing at all anymore...

Thanks for any help!

Best regards,
Space Traveller

Well firstly we cannot really comment here on modified/edited games and what effects the changes have and why. That is a discussion for the S&M forum. The obvious trivial response would be that any mod that reduces the load on the single cpu core running the game would probably improve fps, but maybe at some cost in terms of vanilla gameplay functionality.

As to your actual fps problem, assuming you have a system well-suited and set-up for the game, then you should not be having such an issue in vanilla. Post here your DxDiag and other system/game details as per the above Tech Sp forum Announcement and maybe we can see what is going wrong.

Hi Alan!

First of all I fully understand that you can not (officially) give any support to modified games! And even you hinting to try anyway is really a sign of great support :)

I can only state the following things:

1. X3 AP is really the only game which caused any problems on my machine.
2. My hardware is not state of the art (12gb Ram, Phenom II X4 955 BE, HD 5870, but should be enough for X3 AP)
3. Reducing details does not help. Not at all.
4. Downloaded the game through steam, then installed the bonus pack, "TC Plots for AP" and "IEX".
5. Resetting the mission director instantly solves the problem. Before, only shooting a lone m3 made the game drop to <10 fps, while now even larger battles are no problem at all. So there MUST be a problem related to it. (This and point 2 and 3 hopefully show that it's just a hardware-power-problem)
6. Dxdiag will be in my next post (to make it a bit more structured)
7. Using the latest drivers, and even updated my bios for it (no improvement at all unfortunately)

If you can find a better solution to my problem, i would be even happier of course. But even the workaround with the mission director would be okay for me, if someone explained to me what exactly it did and what i should know about it to not break anything..

Best regards and thank you very much!

Hi, update your sound driver to RealTek HD Audio Codec R2.79 for Win7 x64 (25 June 2015) from here. See if that helps.

Obviously reduce any unnecessary background applications and services while playing, especially ones which may try to access the internet for updates etc.

Good luck, as there doesn't seem any other obvious issue in the DxDiag.

Thanks for the hint! I tried it, but it really had no influence. (I must admit my hopes were quite low, as i never had any other sound related problems before and the mission director seems to be directly related to my problem, which has nothing to do with sound)

There are really no performance hungry background services. I really pay attention on keeping my system clean.

Maybe it's just a problem with this mod..i honestly don't know.

Still, as i fear we are pretty much out of options now (unless you have another idea), the best thing left for me is probably understanding the mission director and use this workaround. For that i'd need to know what the reset does and when it's safe to use it, so nothing breaks and there are no longterm effects (if this is even possible). After all, it brings the performance back, and resetting maybe once a week wouldn't be a big issue for me, as long as i know i wont make my savegame buggy/unstable....(For example resetting while plots are active seems to be a really terrible idea from what i've read :D )

If your Windows page file is on the C drive, try freeing up a bit more hard drive space. Right now, your swap file can exceed the available disk space due to the 12 GB RAM and that can cause hard drive read/write issues, which can in turn reduce game performance.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Space Traveller wrote:2. What exactly does the reset do? And what should i know about it if i use it?
It basically does what every reset does, which is restoring the initial state - in this case - of all MD related scripts and objects. That means (generic and plot) missions will be reset, mission objects will not be properly cleaned up, thus remain in your savegame and duplicates of them might be created if the missions are started again. For a short time, an FPS increase will usually be the result. In the long run you will create other and new problems, mission and FPS related, which will most-likely make your savegame unplayable.
Space Traveller wrote:- and first finish a plot completely before doing so
Good plan, but not always easy to do. Preparations and clean ups for plots often happen in the background and cannot easily be noticed by the player.

All in all, the Mission Director reset option is for testing missions/MD code. It is not a tool to fix performance problems!
Space Traveller wrote:I am playing AP 3.1 with "TC plots for AP and IEX". Apart from that no other mods.
Have you started the plots already? A performance drop could be related to the preparations needed within the plots. I would also check, how many ships there are in the universe. There was a bug in one of the previous X3AP version, which caused the continuous creation of not needed ships, decreasing the overall performance of the game. While this bug was fixed, something similar could happen, maybe as a consequence of a not fully functional installation.

There have been cases where some things in the MD have not been cleaned up properly or build up over time. Quite a few cases were patched but of course there could always be something else.

It's probably worth uploading the savegame somewhere so we can take a look.

Like you told me in your pm, i've uploaded the savegame. Thank you so much for looking into it, even though you guys could just have said "no support for modified games, thread closed". (things you experience in other games' forums  )

I guess everything i can provide on info is already in this thread. But allow me to summarize:
1. Game installed via steam recently, then installed the bonus pack via steam, then installed this mod and IEX (like explained in the mod thread) Apart from that, no other mods or scripts were used
2. Did a lot of missions to gain money, got 10 UTs, a few millions and the game shows miserable performance on my machines (just try to start a fight and it's almost unplayable)
3. Enabling scripts and resetting the mission director boosts the performance to a great level instantly. Even larger fights aren't a problem anymore

But this thread had me convinced that using the mission director is not a solution for me and wont bring me far. On the other hand that means i either find another solution, or this savegame is wrecked for me (and i probably wont have the time yet the nerves to start once again anytime soon :/ )

Edit:
Now I know that this all sounds like the mod is bugged. After all we DO know that there mist be *some* kind of connection to the mission director and all the mod does is....bring back all the missions from tc. So it sounds like a direct connection. On the other hand, i didn't read anything in the thread about performance problems whatsoever, i've checked the last 15 pages....

Also I remember an earlier AP savegame which i got from my old computer which was way later in the game (pretty much had every ship, even a Xenon I). This one was all vanilla but the performance got worse and worse the further i progressed. (Which made me stop playing back them - i just thought my game got "too big", with many big factories and 25 UTs running around...) But still the performance impact was far less severe than what i've currently got...so i figured i just ran out of cpu power for this lategame stuff....

Sorry for coming back to this with a double post...but what shall I say, it is still relevant for me.

Tried it again after a couple months: My savegame only gives around 20 fps....as soon as I reset the mission director, they jump to straight 60 (and never drop below 50)

Like before, I use the "TC plots for AP mod" but with my vanilla savegame, i had the same experience.

So, this is maybe my last shot for X3: Is there *any* workaround available? Anything I can do except for starting a new game and hope it wont happen again?

As long as i'm stuck with "there is nothing you can do, but don't even think about resetting MD, this will definitely brick your game" i see really no other option but to leave X3 behind me. 20 fps give me headaches

I think I can help you with that one. You must accept that all your games will be *** Modified ***. But no need to play around with Mission Director during games. Look for a modified version (or modify it yourself) of the generic missions file, I think the file starts with "3.01" and is in the /director folder. Look for weightings and make the weightings for the two convoy missions equal to zero. Providing that the game uses this modified version, that particular problem should disappear forever. Play on!

Hi glenmcd, my save games seems to be abit bloated also. Could you explain you hack and how to implement it abit better. I have already downloaded your 3.01 Gen mission scripe from one of your older posts but don't think I patched my game save correctly as my game is still unmoddified and is still slogish. Any help would be great.

Now you're getting into an area that isn't all that simple. X3 scripting. It has a system of patches which is not best learned from someone like myself! I'm not even sure where to point you on that one. But here's a start. There are files you'll see in the install folder with extensions ".cat" and ".dat". TC/AP go through these in a certain order looking for which files to actually use. These files have virtual folders in them. But there are the "normal" folders you can see within the install folders. X3 checks them last, and so they can be used in preference to files of same path/filename as those found in the .cat/.dat files. If a file has a .pck extension, this is higher priority than a .txt. Don't take any of this as gospel just use it to find where this stuff is really defined okay.

Be careful about using old scripts as you may be overwriting something that has later changes from Egosoft. Hence it's often best to do your own edits on the latest official files if you can. Good luck!

@glenmcd: I'd love to try that! Unfortunately, I cannot find a generic missions file, neither a file that starts with 3.01 or the /director folder. Would you kindly elaborate this step a bit more? (I'm new to scripting)

***Modified*** isn't a problem at all for me. But i'd love to play some X3 again.

You need to install the "X3 Script Editor 2". It allows you to manipulate the .cat/.dat files. Inside them you'll find the file you seek. Use "extract" and it can copy stuff into accessible folders. From there you can use a text editor or .XML editor.

When it comes to modding, my suggestion is to make no attempt to ever un-install mods. It's too error prone. Instead, backup your vanilla folder complete. Any time you're about to doing any major changes, backup again. I use "Synchronize It!" to make my install folder whatever version I want - vanilla, a few of my mods only, a bunch of other peoples mods etc. One of my backups is a bunch of mods designed to work purely with the DiD start, another targeting the poisoned paranid start. It's important to backup carefully and early because scripting in X3 is quite complex and you WILL go wrong. With backups it won't be a disaster.

Something else you might want is the MSCI reference. Once you get into scripting itself, you'll never look back. Just DON'T go there seriously before you complete the game at least once in vanilla, or using only mods that keep you sane. The mission director bottleneck definitely makes one insane I know from experience LOL.

Ok so , not that hard to do.

But a question for glenmcd: In the weighings there are 3 Convoy missions.

L2M119 = Escort Convoy
L2M127 = Destroy Convey
L2M183 = Dual Convoy

Do You mean just the first 2 set to 0% chance ? and not L2M183. After saving my .cab file and backing up my saves. I have changed these 2 missions and got a moddified game tag, so it worked. So for improvements ...... maybe abit. Its hard to say, still having problems in busy systems with my complex's in. I think that could be related to some problem with complex toobs, i think i'll see if there is a way to change the skins. Lets see how Space Traveller gets on with these changes though.

The Dual Convoy is a recent addition. Up to you what you do with this one. Maybe try it out first?

Hey I just had an idea for benchmarking those generic missions quickly. Get into the Globals file and greatly increase the max missions per sector. Disable all except the ones you want to test. Get a ship with jumpdrive and jump between sectors. All different sectors, although revisting each just once fairly promptly can trigger additional missions usually. Run fraps and every so often, time how long it takes to pass the gate between Unseen Domain and the Unknown Sector East of there.

If you do this for each generic mission type seperately, you'll get to know how much difference it will make for disabling each mission type seperately. This is pretty much what I did some years back leading to me disabling the two I mentioned. It would be good if you do above the for Dual Convoy if you can share your findings in this thread. Actual benchmarks compared to the single convoy missions would be good. Make sure you don't do this test if you have built any factories. Destroying factories doesn't get rid of the lag it creates btw. So do test on a new universe. Activate the script editor, write scripts to make all sectors known, give yourself a good ship with jumpdrive etc etc. Then you're setup for any other benchmarks you want to do in future.

Well, i'm quite confused right now. But i'd really love to try that.

Managed to install X3 Editor 2, also found a generic mission file. Still i cannot exctract or change it. And I don't even know if it's the right file. Actually, there is such a file in most .cat-files. (In the default folder, as well as in the addon folder)

Sorry for all the spoonfeeding, but could you please tell me in which dat/cat file exactly i shall look? And *how* i can change it in x3 editor? Maybe I shouldn't even be playing with these files if i don't have any idea about scripting...but after all i just want my game to become playable again and this seems to be the only solution.

Well, I only looked in the last .cab file .... 13 i think it was numbered. There I found a 3.01 gen mission file, I right clicked on it and selected text viewer. Then I altered the relevent text, saved it and exited. Give it a try /shug
