Station Build problem
I took a Build mission in Contorted Dominion to place a Computer Component factory, pretty straight forward. I proceeded to buy the wrong race factory and placed it directly on the beacon. When I never received the "mission completed" message, I realized it was the wrong race. So I bought the right race and placed it right on top of the other one, thinking mine would get destroyed either immediately or over time. Wrong. They are stacked on top of each other but here's what's weird:
1. If I jump OOS, both factories adjust to 100% Hull.
2. If I jump IS, my factory starts to lose Hull but very slowly.
3. If I use SETA to speed up the destruction, my factory gains Hull %!!
I wanted to use a tractor beam on it but no matter what angle I take, I end up targeting the other factory and agro Split, just happens to be a Dragon right next to me...
Has anyone run into this before? I wonder what happens if I try to complex the factory? Or just leave it and consider the other racial factory as a shield? I'm guessing if someone tries to attack my factory, they're going to hit the Split factory just like I'm doing. That or just leave it to rot. Haven't tried to dock at it yet, that's my next test.

Interesting
best thing to do is reload a save right before you placed the 1st station
2nd best would have been to tractor beam the station out of the way before placing the correct one
but you're past that I guess.
TL;DR = do nothing.
Yes, you can stack stations one atop the other and this is a favoured way to keep complexes compact as when you complex them collision detection is turned off for the connected stations (otherwise CCKs wouldn't work) and again yes when you are OOS collision detection is also turned off so the shields (not hull) will regenerate.
When you are OOS they will be seen as two individual stations so ships can dock at them without a problem and enemies can also attack them independently so the shields of the - now split owned - station will not protect yours. unless you're in sector but then they'll get collision damage from each other so no dice there I'm afraid
What ever you do next make sure you keep a safe save somewhere.
If you don't care about the loss of your station, it's a shame you can't tractor it out of there (but that would probably have destroyed both anyway), then just sit in sector with a bag of popcorn and watch the two of them explode you shouldn't suffer any rep loss as a result. The net result is the same as self-destructing your station in that I wouldn't have thought the split station would have survived it anyway. docking at your station would be interesting and could probably be achieved with a docking computer but you risk blowing up yourself if you're docked when it goes pop.
If you do care about your station then just never go in that sector for longer than a couple of minutes ever again
I have a couple of random stations sitting in one of my EQ Docks as I bought the wrong race, it's hard to tell which is which when looking in the TL's cargo but there is a way using CAG Admin to tell them apart when stored in a dock.
EDIT: you beat me to the submit button did the split station suffer any damage from the self destruct?

Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!

Yea, it turned red on me. I have two stations like that now, one from a "protect station" mission where stray fire hit the station I was defending (still red) and this one. I didn't really want a station there anyway, so just went ahead and did the "self destruct". As far as "on top of each other", I'm talking about literally taking up the same space. I placed both stations via "keyboard 5" to target the beacon, so I couldn't target the station with the tractor beam, it kept hitting the other station first. I guess I could have left it there but like I said, I really didn't want to have to set up CLS to feed it EC's, silicon or crystals. Plus I think my TS's would blow up, at least I did w/o docking software.

Interesting, I still wonder if letting them cancel each other out may not have done any rep damage.wolfee wrote:Yea, it turned red on me. That's what I meant too, both stations models occupy the exact same spacewolfee wrote:As far as "on top of each other", I'm talking about literally taking up the same space. Only if you were in sector. But you probably don't want to take that risk anyway.wolfee wrote:Plus I think my TS's would blow up, at least I did w/o docking software.

Notes
Some interesting and arcane fine points here. Let me add some more.
If you self destruct your station, then the residue of that station will cause damage to the other station. But only if you are IS. That is the grayed out things you see around the TC universe. They are navigation hazards but fade away in game day or so. I would guess that would cause rep loss if another race is involved. So don't come back for a while.
You can store a station you've bought at the HUB or your PHQ. It does take up a lot of space.
If you tried tractor beams to pull them apart, at least one station would blow and the other would be severely damaged at least.
Different rules must be involved with NPC players like the Xenon. After I blew up a Xenon SY, I tried to block its return by building my station on its exact coordinates. It didn't work. The Xenon station came back when its rebuild time was up, on exactly the same coordinates. I was OOS. When I entered the sector, the new Xenon SY moved nearby to different coordinates, like collision avoidance applied to the SY.
A note on the HUB plot. After the first time, I build a dedicated Chip plant in Barren Shores, using most of the Silicon 'roids to build the biggest self supporting complex I could. I just built Chips, and stored them on the biggest TSs. I still wasn't finished when I got to Chips in the Plot but it was about two thirds done, which still helped a lot. Sometimes I added Savage Spur, Ore Belt, and MOF to the mix for Chips, but not dedicated like Barren Shores. These helped too.

Bill in S.F., enjoying the game
I underestimated the Microchips for sure. I have a 15, 10, 2x5's and a 2 microchip complexes scattered around (Savage Spur, Barren Shores, MoF, can't remember the others off hand) and I thought I had a ton stored up but the balance just takes forever. Plus all I do is defend Savage Spur now, although a bunch of lasertowers there has helped.
This is a very fun game but my main gripe is pathing. Why bother buying fast ships if all they do is slam into ... anything. I think I've lost 3 springblossoms fully loaded with experimental/prototype Starburst Shockwave cannons for OOS defense and I'll get alerts that my factory is under attack, check my springblossom, realize it's doing nothing, tell it to attack and then get a message that it was destroyed by my own frickin factory. Same with Spitfyre's, I was going to bring a few along with me in my Griffon but all they do is collide with the first thing they can find. (exaggerating a bit but not much)

Collisions are supposed to be turned off OOS. They shouldn't crash into anything if you're not in the sector. Though TC's OOS combat system has issues, I don't think that's one of them.
If you're IS though... yeah, extremely fast ships tend to crash a lot.
So, try not to be IS when you need to deploy those ships.

The other issue is that collisions with stations are considered an attack. I've gotten attacked by Race Response Fleets after some random civilian ship crashed into a station of mine. That means it's likely that having a race's station damaged or destroyed via collision with yours would result in a reputation hit or attack by the defenders.
The only viable solutions without taking at least some hit are to either reload a previous save or never enter the sector again.

Here is something I've noticed about deploying stations for the races....
You don't have to be EXACTLY on the nav beacon. You can be within a few kilometers of it and still get the mission completed notification.
I have done the same thing before, wrong race station, and then placed the correct one next to it and it worked out fine.

I'd like to shoot you in the butt with a EBC gun, hide in the asteroids and laugh at what I done, put a blood blister upon each bun, I'd like to shoot you in the butt with a EBC gun.
Some people are like slinkies, not worth a whole lot, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
