Bugged me for a while.
WIKI:
"Each rank requires roughly 3 times the points to advance. For each rank you gain, you must do 3 times the work, or do things worth 3 times the notability. Each step being (more or less) geometrically harder then the last. "
EXPECTATION:
rank 1->2: one missions
rank 2->3: three missions
rank 3->4: nine missions, etc.
(and over 20k missions to get from rank 9 to 10)
REALITY:
rank 6->7: three missions
rank 7->8: three missions
rank 8->9: three missons, etc.
Some notoriety gain/loss, however, are set numbers. Like capping M1/2 in ap drops you from rank 10 to 6 (~300k rep loss), or 6 to -3.

Re: notoriety Questions
I wanted to start a thread about this myself.
It seems to me that that going through plot missions gains rep ranks quite quickly. Almost the same with regular missions like assassinations.
Yet, maybe killing a pirate in a M7 is quite more noteworthy than killing one in a M4, hence the same % rep gained.

That is how it works in TC/AP, probably to make the game faster paced.
Rep scale is not linear indeed, but completing missions give a reputation reward which is proportional to the next rank (other rep gains are fixed).
Because of this, is still easy to get to the top ranks, and you do not get any rep gain for missions at the highest level (since there is no next rank).
