Interesting Combat in TC

Post by Bill Huntington » Sat, 16. Jul 16, 06:30

I'm doing a playthrough of USC Commander which skips some stuff in Terran Defender. I'm doing the Venus escort and face the Xenon ambush with the J. I'm a recently acquired Hyperion. I let a Terran Osaka do most of it but I kill the J at the end and then the rest of the Xenon.

I remember how much fun it is to kill a bigger enemy in a smaller ship. The standard one is killing a Q with a Hype without help. There's killing the Q with an M3 or even a Kestral, which takes too long to be enjoyable after the first time. Once I killed a K with a Kestral. I used other Xenon for 99% of it. They were attacking me in that small gap between the front and the middle of the K. It has a little lip and you can hide most of your hull there. The other Xenon shoot at you and hit the K. It's a challenge to stay there because the K is twisting and turning in a circle among other things. When its hull is almost gone, you save the game so you can fire the last shots to kill it. I killed a K with my Kestral but then there was nothing to protect me from the other Xenon. I died a few seconds later but what a way to go! Taking a K with me to Valhalla!

What's your best David and Goliath story in TC or AP?

My David and Goliath stories always revolve around numbers, not size. Kha'ak clusters with an M5; that sort of thing. When I am confronted with large obstacles, like a Q or something, I usually can't help myself and resort to an M8, which is like "David and Goliath if David had a bazooka instead of a sling."

Pop 'em and stretch 'em. Once you get them to chase you they lose their swarm and turn into just a string of encounters with individuals, pairs or maybe trios when you turn on them.

After that it's all about steering. Even a kyon emitter can't get a solid lock if you can move erratically enough. Then it's dogfighting 101, get behind them and blow them away. If they are in a pair or a triad you have to strike fast, do some damage (to affect their speed) and then escape again. The reduced speed will break your target out of the pair.

The hardest part is getting in behind the fighter at the core once you've eliminated the scouts. One swipe from him and you're basically toasted.

Admittedly, a Remote Guided Warhead from max range will one shot a cluster as well. And the Kestrel can fire it.

Fun thing about slings in biblical times: They were extremely deadly weapons used in war.
They are more the equivalent of guns than throwing pebbles.

The actual David and Goliath was less 'small weak guy using a toy' and more 'Indiana Jones shooting the guy with the sword'
