Game crashing when killing Q's

Post by T3Lunaris » Mon, 13. Mar 17, 23:51

While killing xenon Qs in a springblossom I've run across some sort of bug that causes the game to crash when my ship has pulled away from the attack run and is gaining distance to begin my next attack, so far I've found that

a) it only happens when I'm pulling away from the Q and leaving from the rear (not from the front)
b) the Q in question has ion shard railguns in it's rear turrets and starts shooting (I think).

So far I have tried switching to the lowest graphics setting and disabling vertex optimization as well as disabling anti-alias and anti-isotropic I've tried with and without the auto target camera on, I've tried it with the EMPC and starburst in the rear guns and I'm using 4 A/M launchers and 4 starburst in main guns I'm running a stock steam game no mods and it's the latest version.

error log below:

hopefully this helps cause I love this game and hate having to avoid Qs while on patrol.

Could you provide a savegame so that someone else could try and reproduce the problem?

Also a DxDiag would be handy for us to see if there are any driver or codec issues involved.

Thanks. I expect you can update your Nvidia graphics driver at the Nvidia driver update site and you can certainly update that old RealTek sound driver to HD Audio Codec R2.81 for Win7 x64 from here.

I don't think those will necessarily resolve your crash issue and you don't seem to have any bad codec issues, but updating drivers is always a good idea.

Here is the FAQ on uploading saves, but you may have a better upload site in mind than those listed. Please avoid suspect, spammy or register-to-download sites.

ok uploading save to http://depositfiles.com/files/xaiqn78h5 you'll already be in combat range of a Q and flying towards it's rear end so be ready.

Did some more experimenting and had the glitch while fighting a carrack, first time that happened but it got me thinking that it might be caused by my turrets gonna do some more testing to see if disabling my turrets firing on anything bigger than an M6 would help.

just tested disabling turrets and still crashed so that's another thing we can check off the list.

I just played your save and fought the Q over many passes including leaving away from the Q's rear and all without any issues. Have you updated your device drivers?

Just a thought - the battle makes intensive use of the cpu so what are your cpu temperatures while fighting?

It may also be worth doing a quick RAM check to see if any memory issues are at play.

Ran a memory check and no reported problems, also I just ran the save again after my computer had been idle and the game crashed even with the cpu cool (not sure how to check temp but none of the internal fans were going full tilt or even half tilt)

I'm made a recording of it with fraps and managed to get it to happen 6 seconds into the video if you want to look at it I've got it at http://depositfiles.com/files/i0lenm1pc though it may be a bit short it captures the moment the game crashes about six seconds in.

There's no real need for a video as I gave your save a thorough exercise with lots of different variations while delivering and taking fire, all without any issues. Unless you are doing something extremely unusual, I don't think you could be breaking the game by how you play.

I am getting rather more inclined to suspect a driver issue now - perhaps triggering on a specific sound or special effect such as from a weapon firing or a hit effect. Once again, have you updated your device drivers?

Just as a sanity check, please have a read through the problems and remedies Sticky and see if anything there catches your attention. Maybe any non-obvious things such as surroundsound emulators, turbo key mapping, etc.

nothing there looks like anything I have setup on my comp, though I have noticed that occasionally when fighting the game will freeze momentarily (less than a second) when destroying enemy ships or if a new group of ships jumps into the sector (or one big ship) but I assume that's just due to having to load a bunch of objects into the sector I'm in.

Hmm, so regarding your original issue, it was when just pulling away from the rear of the Q and not just when you actually killed it? I ask because you now seem to be outlining potential issues with ship model creation or removal.

Out of the blue, when did you last defrag your gamefiles and pagefile hard drive(s)?

I did a full defrag about a month ago and as for the Q it only happens when I'm pulling away from the Q and I'm in it's rear quarters, as long as I stay out of the rear of the Q while pulling away I don't have any problems.

As for the second issue it only seems to happen when I first start up the game and load a save thats in the middle of combat, and even then it goes away after about 2 mins which is why I figure it's just the game having to deal with a lot of changing events suddenly.

Just had an OpenGL error occur on my graphics card while playing Endless Sky and made me wonder if this TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) thing may be to blame (though honestly I have very little experience with it) From what I can gather it has something to do with the graphics card being unable to process a certain amount of workload in a certain period of time.

I would like your opinion about this idea before I go messing around in the system registry and potentially screw up my computer.

TDRs are an issue that successive versions of OSs and device drivers have sought to increasingly minimise their effects on the user, but in the end it relies on the application writer to build in a management schema that clears and restarts the relevant gpu and Direct3D elements for subsequent stable use after a TDR. Otherwise the only sure way to fully recover is to stop and restart the OS.

Endless Sky is a still-developing and cooperative-authoring venture and I honestly would not think that they have fully and finally error-trapped every element of their code yet. I personally would not use Endless Sky as a diagnostic indicator for your system state.

The fact that the crashes in X3AP are not attributed to TDRs would incline me to look elsewhere. We have ascertained that the crashes only occur on your system and game installation. You have changed graphics and sound drivers and you have checked for system stability and hardware issues.

Just reviewing your posts here, I have just realised that I don't see mention of the usual very first diagnostic step having been taken. Have you verified your Steam gamefile caches for X3TC and X3AP separately?

Also I know you said that your X3AP was unmodified, but have you ever modified your Steam version of X3TC?

Thanks for the info on the TDR, keeps me from messing around in the registry.

I actually did verify my version on steam when I first started having the problem and was trying to see if I could fix it by graphics settings and/or changing in game weapons/turret settings (i.e. having turrets not fire on the Q while flying away), as for the TC I only installed it to run AP so it's unmodified but I did verify it.
I'm sure this probably wouldn't cause the problem but I use the mouse and keyboard and wondered if holding down multiple buttons on the keyboard had anything to do with it.

I still think that the Ion Shard Railgun has something to do with it given that the last thing I usually hear before the game crashes is the sound of the weapon impacting with my shield.

That last bit of information makes it really seem like a codec issue, but you don't have any of the usual suspects - and you said you don't use a surroundsound emulator.

I checked your codec list against mine and the only differences that I can see are that you have these codecs:
  • iTV Data Sink,0x00600000,1,0,itvdata.dll,6.06.7601.17514
    iTV Data Capture filter,0x00600000,1,1,itvdata.dll,6.06.7601.17514

    AVI Draw,0x00600064,9,1,quartz.dll,6.06.7601.19091
    RDP DShow Redirection Filter,0xffffffff,1,0,DShowRdpFilter.dll,
Also some of the AMD codecs that I have are named in your DxDiag as ATI ones. AMD has not been called ATI for a long time now and so maybe your recent graphics driver update was either incomplete or was not a clean uninstall and then reinstall. It might be worth doing a clean uninstall and then install of the latest suitable AMD driver - but the differences there might just be because I have the Win10 version driver and you have Win7.

Frankly I am rather stumped as to what else to try.

I have no idea what those codecs are even for but I'm pretty sure that if I knew how to get rid of them I would cause I don't think they are that important (famous last words) as for the other thing I'm guessing it is probably just the difference in windows versions.

As for the glitch it's not as big a problem now that I've got my M7 Thresher for dealing with the Q's and I thank you for trying your best to solve the problem, I have a feeling this may just be one of those rare errors that is caused by a certain set of conditions that no one expected.

I've the same problem!
Same ship with PSSC in turrets and PM/AM in main slots.

Fighting one Q and some m3-m5 in Split sector and have CDT all the time.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: X3TC.exe
Application Version:3.2.0.4
Application Timestamp: 0x576295f5
Fault Module Name: X3TC.exe
Fault Module Version: 3.2.0.4
Fault Module Timestamp: : 0x576295f5
Exception Code: 0xc0000095
Exception Offset: 0x0006672b
OS Version: Win 10 x64 PRO

I've updated my sound and video drivers, still crashes.

I've got no crashes in Vidar flying through Xenon sectors before.
Now in Springblossom in fight with Q and some m3-m5 i've got constant crashes.
