I know the only true answer to my exam questions.

After a depressing few days marking this fact has been relentlessly ground in to me.

Erm. Aren't you supposed to know the answers ? :o

Or is this to prepare us a for a radical new form of exam where there are no right answers? A bold move to be sure and I can see it fitting the zeitgeist. Relativism and "alternative facts" being all the rage these days. Betsy DeVos would be very proud, I'm sure.

well funny you should say that, but the official answer sheet has some of the wrong answers on it, because the exam was changed at nearly the last minute, but not the answer sheet, because that wasn't replaced, even though I thought I provided a replacement.

Possibly it was my fault. I'm not sure.

But since I was marking it, and I wrote it, it didn't actually effect anything in reality.

But the external moderators get to puzzle over the 'official' documents soon. That'll be fun....

I have dumped the exam anyway, I hate exams, stupid way to assess knowledge anyway. They don't assess understanding, they assess the ability to recall information under pressure.

From now on I'm using a purely portfolio based approach, continually assessed so the student doesn't have to guess how well they're doing, they will quite literally know the moment they cross into 'I have passed this module' territory.

I already do it in aonther module, it works well, helps with engagement no end.

The laws of thermodynamics.
Most things beyond that will get blurry and filled with exceptions.

... I tend to be uncertain and/or confused about many things. :D
Humans are deuterostomes, which means that when they develop in the womb the first opening they develop is the anus.
This means that at one point you were nothing but an asshole.

Some people never develop beyond this stage.

I knew that I had learned how to swim when I stopped drowning... True story. :)

Perhaps as a result, later experiences with drownproofing and survival swimming didn't rattle me that much. Though, for some reason, I still dislike "jumping" into water and getting pushed into it is just not cool...

Sounds like my memory of how parents taught their children to swim/respect the sea back in Oz when I was a kid.

Pretty much 'get this right fast or you will die'. Mind you that was some time back.

And they weren't wrong, because if you didn't get it right fast you did die, or at least got badly hurt.

I got it wrong a few times, and got yelled at by the Lifeguards before being marched home only to be yelled at again by my parents...

Playing dare with stinging Jellyfish is, as it turns out, not a permitted funtime activity :)

But my swimming ability was great by the time I got to the UK.

I was in fact made to wait between getting swimming certificates to make it look like I was learning to swim, even though I could already swim better then even the Gold certificate required.

My style was, and always remained, rubbish, because who cares about style? The purpose of swimming is to not drown isn't it?

Never understood the fascination with 'perfect style'.

My experience was similar and quite aways back... It's one of my most vivid toddler memories.

My parents escorted me to the surf, each holding one hand. They were laughing and pulling me up and over each of the likely very tiny waves. OK, that was fun... Then, they didn't pull me up one time and then, suddenly, it was me versus the sea.

I remember a lot of "warbl" interspaced with "shhhworgleeeshwarb" and infrequent bouts of "waaaaah." I remember seeing the sand churning in the surf and getting tossed around. Finally, my father rescued me. Being a Navy Man, former beach lifeguard and used to swimming miles, literally, for what he'd call "relaxing exercise", surf rescue of a toddler was easily within his capabilities... When my ears cleared, he was laughing his ass off and my mother was screaming her head off. I was somewhat of the opinion that both of them were nuts and that the ocean is the most deadly beast on the planet. :) (That might be something we can all agree on.)
Never understood the fascination with 'perfect style'.
Efficiency = better chance of survivability, supposedly. Enthusiasts rarely recognize the fact that "not going into the water" is the best survival swimming method. :)

Efficiency to me means being able to tread water for long enough to be rescued, or being able to swim a long way without getting tired, not to be able to execute a perfect overarm stroke wossname.

The sea will just kill you in a second if you're not constantly aware of what a dangerous place it can be. My dad too went for the first lesson option of making me realise how the sea can go from being so lovely looking to scary in a second. It stuck.

My mum wasn't mad at him though, because she'd already had her own scary encounter and realised I needed to learn fast.

I love the sea, always have, but I have never forgotten that first lesson.

Too many people fail to realise this, no amount of swimming certificates in a swimming pool will prepare you for it.

It amazes me how many people think getting drunk and swimming in the sea is a good plan. Even in my wildest days that never even crossed my mind.

You don't need to be able to swim faster than the shark, you just need to swim faster than that British backpacker.

Similar to a saying we have where I live: you can't outrun a bear so just make sure you can outrun your buddy. :fg:
