How do you do long range scan using Vive controllers

I am supposed to scan an area for goods in the tutorial. I have my ship on long range scan mode but can't for the life of me work out what to do next. I assume I fire off a scan "ping" but can't see any reference to how or any control settings for it.

Activate long range scan mode, and press down the button you use to fire missiles to charge up the LR scan ping. Release the button to fire it off.

Can I suggest that the secondary weapon display show "scanner ping" instead of missiles when in long range scan mode? Would make this a bit more intuitive for old farts like me
