Star Wars - The Last Jedi (may contain spoilers)

Post by apogee » Sat, 16. Dec 17, 18:49

Went to see it yesterday.

And really enjoyed it, ok most of it, as with previous ones there's the occasional unnecessary scene. but certainly improved on the force awakens.

Though as a result of Carrie Fishers death, it meant all the way through the film I did keep wondering if this is the moment she would be written out of the story.

She isn't, she makes it all the way to the end. so don't be concerned by this.

Also the porgs are not obtrusive, didn't mind them at all as they don't interfere in the plot.

Also saw it yesterday. Enjoyed the humour, some of the scenes were stunning (the final 'silent' scene in particular).

Did feel four films in one, and could have been 30 minutes shorter! Bit of a bladder buster!

I expected it to finish a couple o minuits earlier, but this time the force was with me, as opposed to to rogue one where I wasdesparate with 30 minutes to go.

Interesting... on Rotten Tomatoes the critiques ratings are a blast while the audience rating is at ~50%.
I have yet to see the The Last Jedi and I don't know if it is worth it.

IMHO Disney movies from the last couple of years were usually bland and watered down "trademarks", admittedly with high production quality.
And usually they charge way more in cinema for Disney movies because Disney charges them extra.

Is it "Good" or "Fan-Good"?

I made it to the end, but had to force turbo waddle to the nearest loo! :)

Memo: had a good mood and feeled to write stuff outofmylazynonnativearse, read it or skip it :)

If only keep in mind the films without any Books, its good.
The Humor isn't as intrusive as many yells, maybe a few less would be good but who knows thats a personal opinion. Only one thing i would agree is the "water down" of the seriousness of the first order was indeed a bit too much. the "phonejoke" is still splendid as an entry for the following desaster led by the initiator, cheer up and crush. :D

Poor Hux hucks hughs or how he is written!
But boy had i laughed as Snoke was like Palpatine in the Legostarwars "spinoffs" or the freemaker adventures. which suited quitewell but not for the lower ranks of the First Order for me personally. ;)

the Casino scene feeled not optimal but take it of leave it BB-8 made a fortune ! :)
Did feel four films in one, and could have been 30 minutes shorter! Bit of a bladder buster!
there i can't agree, personally i feeled there were more "questions" than satisfaction. for me it could had been even a hour longer, and three more for my bladder !
But it "feeled" better than EP7, in many ways, as for Hux got a better Screenplay compared to the previous movie and by far more sympathic/authentic than being a yelping maggot alone... and finally the transitions to his own story proceeds.
Unfortunately the old ones has to pass away forcefully always, a GTFO attitude and going aggresives/rogue as being pestered more would be an option either if your lifework got crushed and the same spiral seems to start again.
as for, yep you probably got who i mean. but the mean greengrinch starts to meddle and everything seems to be clear again. ;P

( same as for Developers which are getting directly insulted as being lazy, cheap, ignorant and as such. keep going and you may be left with a much larger hole in your heart if they vanish instead of enduring that particular peoples out ;) )

@apogee, they do interfer, they were stealing the Dinner for the poor wookie. just with being around ;)

Disclaimer: I like movies a lot and I like Star Wars and general scif-fi/sci-fan also a lot. I'm not one of theose SW people that will know all details, lore and whatnot about SW universe and frankly I dont care.

So I went into this expecting it to be better than TFA, having given that a pass on its resemblance to SW (A New Hope) as I understood that JJ had to somewhat re-ignite the SW fire and put it back on track, removing some ill feelings related to teh prequels (I like them just fine btw, not great though). So I expected TLJ to be propper good and propper SW, and it was (is).

The movie went often in directions I didn't expect and even subverted my expectations I grew accustomed to in this type of film. Many blockbuster movies these days use the same formula and structure and thus one often "knows" where it will lead, which makes many movies feel bland and sameish. Not that TLJ made ground breaking choices, but it did try new things and as said before, went in unexpected directions, which is for me always a good thing when a movie manages to surprise me.

As I mentioned in a topic months ago, they went the grey Jedi way, even though they have not (yet) fully embraced it, but the overall notion that people on either side have nuance and depth, often conflicting feelings, make this Empire level good movie (for different reasons) for me. Its not preachy about doing the right thing and all that nonsense, it has people doing what they think is right, fight for it and then live with the consequences, hopefully growing and learning from it, which all "main" characters did in their arcs.

The only less enjoyable part was the get key-maker plot, which felt forced a bit and does not really add much to the whole other than giving a few characters some screen time they otherwise would not have, its not done too good and can be skipped for most part.

The battles and fights are great though, and that Laura Dern Moment when the movie goes silent is one of the greatest movie moments in the last decade, you could hear people's heart beat in the theatre and everyone stopped breathing for a few seconds. That was a great moment. I love when directors make great use of sound design in combination with visuals, sound is a powerfull tool for great movies that not many make good use of it.

Anyway, long story short, The Last Jedi is a great movie and a great SW Film, I'm going to watch it at least once more and will be eager to see how JJ concludes this trilogy and more so am interested in what Rian Johnson comes up for his new SW trilogy. We need more good sci-fi. :-)

Also watch it as big and with as many people as you can. May the force be with you, even though that is not how the force works. :-)

MFG

When the film started and the first face I saw was Ade Edmondson's, I briefly thought I must be watching a spoof, though I later discovered that to understand why I thought that you pretty much have to be British and over 30. As it turned out he played the character fairly straight; he was decidedly less of a comedy caricature than General Hux.

Snoke was a bit of a disappointment. After all the hype after the last film about who he was, he turned out to be just another evil overlord with an over-inflated sense of his own infallibility. We never did find out much more about him, and now it doesn't really matter anyway.

Then there's the plot itself. How many times is the Star Wars franchise going to use the device of the good guys trying to destroy a super-weapon before it destroys their base? They managed to squeeze it in at least twice in this film, once with the dreadnought and once on the salt flats.

Despite the niggles above, it was definitely an enjoyable film, with a good balance between epic story and individual characters, and between action and humour.

I enjoyed it, but I still think that Kylo Ren is the worst Star Wars character ever. Even worse then Jar Jar Binks.

Philip and I (along with our sister and my kids) went to see it at midnight on the first night. However, this is the first time I've got my lazy butt into position to write a review. :)

Generally I liked it. It had everything I was looking for in Star Wars. More than that, I appreciated the number of times they led you down the garden path into expecting something to happen, then laughed at you, said "Not gonna happen!" and went in a different direction!

I had 3 gripes, not enough to make it a bad movie, but enough to mar it to the point where I'd not call it perfect. Spoilered just in case:
Spoiler
Show
1) I agree with those who say that the Casino plot was unnecessary. Sad to say, because I loved the developing relationship between Finn and Rose (and once again, they teased the "she'll be his sidekick" relationship, then subverted it into her becoming every inch his equal.). But the scene went nowhere and did nothing.

2) Admiral Holdo's plan for keeping the "spark" of the rebellion alive was stupid. There, I've said it. Surely there was something she could do that was not going to cavalierly waste the lives of two entire starship crews! And if their deaths were necessary, it is a bit rough that she didn't tell her senior crew members (Because even if he was demoted, Dameron was still a Captain). Poor leadership right there.

3) I thought they built Phasma up as a serious enemy, only to pretty much waste her.
So, not perfect. But a damn good film, and worthy of the title "Star Wars".

I hope that the 20th Century Fanfare gets added to it for the Video release, now that both are owned by Disney! :)

Contains spoilers, but ... why read this now if you're worried? So look away!

Enjoyed it, but I was tediously bored with the entire casino arc, which felt like it had tacked into it a load of completely irrelevant characters that were there for marketing purposes (i.e. more aliens for models). It also felt like it was to give some characters something to do. However, once we got past that part it became enjoyable again.

I didn't notice properly, but were those the Jedi books in the cabinet under the bunk in the Falcon at the end? Didn't get a proper look and not seen it again :D Wasn't sure if i was just mis-reading the implication.

I really wonder what'll happen with Leia's character in the next film :o
Also agree, Kylo Ren is pants at the moment - and weak. Snoke was made out to be this... thing, but fizzled to nowt. They don't present anything... significant. The threat is the overall power of the bad guys, not a centralised powerful individual holding it together with fear and intimidation...

Yep good.

Luke portrayed correctly as a flawed man who nearly makes catastrophic choices, But pulls himself back at the last minute.

The admirals choice to fly her ships to oblivion undoes all the good work carri Fisher did in the 70s to promote good female characters. If one ship tracks, scatter!

The lessons learned about wasting the bomber fleet set up what's his face to become an awesome leader in future films.

Casino plot was boring but good because it was a fools errand
Split now give me death? Nah. Just give me your ship.

Spoiler Alert.

Ok, so I went to the movie with very negative attitude (read the YT reviews and story spoilers) to confirm that Disney destroyed SW.
What is strange that I found out the movie was OK and I enjoyed it. It wasn't great and it did have a few very questionable scenes, but it rather nice build for upcoming trilogy finale.

The good:
- entire opening battle
- New ships: FO Dreadnought, rebel bombers, rebel ships, TIE Silencer
- The scenece where rebel cruiser jump into Supremacy (someone forgot to install a hyperspace intredictor onto that ship :P )
- Kylo-Rey "mind conversations"
- Kylo "kill all the past" Ren
- all Rey lightsaber scenes
- fight with the red guard
- visual of salt planet battle (red mist everywhere)
- "Pragmatic" hacker - his every scene and every dialogue is so good! It's like a tribute to every person in history of SW galaxy stuck between sith/jedi, republic/empire conflict - basically giant F*** You! to both sides. I hope he made off the supremacy before it blew up:)

The bad:
- vice admiral Pink - they put her just to die and killed admiral Acbar off-screen? <TRIGERRED>
- Snoke death - so you make this musterious ulimate villan and you kill it like some random thug?
- Phasma death - same as above
- it looks every single "main" death in this episode is bad, but they didn't killed Leia? WTF? :)
- Rey parents are nobody
- all the galaxy surrendered to FO and ignored resistance call.
- entire resistance reduced to size that fit into Millenium Falcon
- ending scene - so we need to wait for a new generation of rebels to grew up?

The ugly:
- Leia "space superman" scene
- "milking" scene
- Luke death by fade to nothing
- Yoda CGI
- Why Supremacy didn't had hyperspace intredictors build in or as escorts?
- Why Supremacy didn't had any small escort at all ? you decided to chase bunch of mices with road roller.
- why they didn't just launched a swarm of fighters? Supremacy alone would probably had thousands of them.

Rating:
I'd say it 6.5/10

My personal thoughts:
- snoked killed too easy - I hope he "ressurect somehow" - Snoke said that he created Kylo-Rey connection and at the end they still have he connection, so this might indicate that Snoke is still alive.
- Phasma might survive - we didn't see the body, she fall into the sea of flame.
- Rey said that Kylo will turn to light, Kylo say that Rey will turn to dark - what if they both end up grey/ballanced to fight "resurected" Snoke? That would be epic.
- Kylo said that Rey parents are nobody, but he could lie or his vison could be Snokes' lie - still hope that Rey is Palpatine grandauther or reincarnation (would explain how Rey has natural connection to the dark side on Luke's island) - that would also fit nicely that she would "turn to the dark". This would also fit nice with Rey-Kylo pairing where Kylo is Vader descendant while Rey is Palpatine.

Completely agreeing with you. My friend fell asleep multiple times and I did nearly, too.
The only thing that makes this movie barely watchable is the Star Wars brand. They are going to milk it until it dies.
