There are plenty of pre-electricity churches in the UK and probably not as many in the US. Plus, few of those would likely never undergo renovation. A a result, there are probably only a very few, special, churches that use ropes to ring the bells. Most use automated systems, some even going so far as using speakers playing bell-rings instead of banging away on a real bell...brucewarren wrote:...On a somewhat more serious note, is that sort of accident with a bell rope actually possible outside the UK? I've a suspicion that other countries don't fit them to a wheel in the same fashion.

Actually I was hoping someone would pick up on a peculiarity of British church bells.
Most bells in the world are suspended just below the axle and swing like a pendulum under said axle.
Traditionally British Bells are mounted on a big wheel enabling them to turned just about all the way upside down. In the hands of a skilled person it helps with the the change ringing. In the hands of the unskilled it's possible to pull too hard and have the bell rotate through more than 360 degrees. If that happens the wheel will wind up the rope and could lift said unskilled person some distance off the ground.
I heard this from my father many years ago who had an interest in bell ringing, but of course I don't know for certain if the British system is unique or whether any other countries mount their bells this way.

...In Change Ringing, it is possible for the bell ringers to adjust the time at which they pull their rope to control the speed of striking to produce the pattern of changes....
It's remarkable how far we've come in a few thousand years. Technology is wonderful! Yay Science!
