Yes and No,
The pros are:
In smaller craft vs smaller craft they are am effect hull reduction weapon
In larger craft they can hit missiles easily
They are very accurate
They are fast firing
The Cons are:
In combat versus larger craft they are really pointless, hulls are too big to worry about the MD
The ammo is short supplied, so unless you supply yourself you will constantly be on the lookout.

The thing is...there is no thing.

They are great for "surgical" captures when you are after hulls no less than 87% sharp. They are great too for missile defense on the back of a Nova.
The ammo is used up a lot slower than you think and supply should never be a problem unless you try to kill M2s after M2s with it.

Many people strongly underestimate the mass drivers. Yes, you have to pay your ammo, yes, it's quite slow at making damage on big hulls, and all that. But let's repeat that those damages CANNOT be repaired by the victim, while in fight. It is the ONLY weapon that is not concerned by the shields. You could have 1x1mw or 7x125mw, the result is the same to the mass drivers: they don't care, they hit the hull straight.
Peace means to reload a gun
Thinking about that, what does it matter? Its not as if they think, oh gosh darn it, now i have to go to a shipyard and spend my hard-earned money repairing my ship, maybe it would be of more use with X-OU, where the direct result of your mass-driver attack would be another player having to go to a shipyard to get repaired, THAT would be a reason to have them. I still don`t think they are of any use, precision capping? i can do that with my Bayamon with 2 Ion ds and 2 aPSGs, the Ion Ds strip the shield instantly, then with two aPSGs, can slowly bring the hull down. But let's repeat that those damages CANNOT be repaired by the victim, while in fight.
The only reason i see for them is destroying fast M5s.
So it's come to this, I told you this would happen Ani! The fanboys are taking over!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
there are other disadvantages.
I once had a dream/inspiration of equiping some corvettes
with massdrivers and whatching the tracers go flying everywhere
So I gave 2 M6 4mass drivers each (2 on front guns 2 on turrets)
then told them to attack a Titan.
but the darn things collission avoidance wouldn't allow them to get into
weapon range
(Probably why AIs dont go round with them?)
