If you want to have a go at 3D modelling in MAX, have a look for a program called "Gmax"

It was released by Discreet as a way to create 3D models for games and was done free.

At least the price is right :)

Even though I have no artistic skill what-so-ever, and by the looks of it I ain't going to be slepeing for awhile so might as well.

Yes, and yes. MAX 5 comes with a bunch of really good tools - like hinging from an edge and a neon-light material, as well as providing an all new layout - 3d snap is on the top now, less used stuff has been tucked away, etc...
