Poll: Ecliptic Projector or No Ecliptic Projector

Post by khanis » Sun, 28. Nov 04, 04:03

I usually keep mine on because it helps me navigate, but it detracts from the visual aspect of this game almost completely. Have to choose the lesser of two evils i suppose. What does everyone use regularly?

Off most of the time, except for when I'm lost or want to see where I am in relation to the plane.

I never turn it on. Like you said, it completely detracts from the game. It makes the sector feel like a small little box with generic objects placed around in it.

I really don't like it, and never buy it.

I have mine on about 50% of the time. Always turn it off during battles though. Been this way since XBTF. I have a tendancy to get turned around a lot and wind up going through the wrong gate

I used it when first exploring the uni. Was a big help finding "lost gates"...

I've never even installed one in my ships. It's not like the sectors in X2 are so big that you're likely to get lost easily!

I like using them to orient myself around more easily. I just look it as a sort of software component that displays a 2d grid over your cockpit windows, but makes it look real or whatever, I dont really finds it makes the game seem less real.

In XBTF it was invaluable, but now in X2, i just bring up the map, lock onto to something and navigate that way

I turn it on all times. It more important for me when I am dropping stations so they are all even on plane in rows or squares after placed myself on plane and using numberpad 5 for z axis.

I hate it!

I already have a problem with x that it does not make enough use of 3dimensions, most (all?) the regions are on a flat plane! too many north/south gates not enough "top" or "bottom" gates!

(though I would prefer gateless real physics universe with planets to orbit (if not land on))

I use it in battle for that "retro" feel.

I use it and I am glad it is available but I toggle it off when I dont need it because as your question implies, it is not very aesthetically pleasing.

I was expecting a series of circles from around the planet and/or sun marking out a true ecliptic plane and disappearing into the distance rather than a slightly too small grid reminding you that its just a square on a game board, but the grid is helpful except you cannot tell which side is up, eg it could look greeny if you are below the plane or something like that IMHO.

I use it mainly to re-orient myself after battles. I used it a lot more in X:BTF when the gates were much harder to find.

I virtually never use it... Actually, thinking about it, I'll amend that - I never use it, yet I continue to install it on every ship I might occasionally fly, probably because its one more thing to be destroyed in place of something useful.

I only use it sometimes to orient my TL, that I remote pilot, before placing a station. I use exterior view or the monitor when I place a station and like to see where it will be so I need to know where the TL is pointed to get the right viewing angle.

First of all let me state that I buy absolutely every piece of equipment that I can place on my personal ships. My thought here is that this increases my chance of not destroying my shields, weapons, or Docking computer if I accidentally ram something I shouldn't.

Second, I almost never use the ecliptic projector unless I get disoriented during a long assassination mission. Then I flip it on until I get my bearings and then flip it off again.
Be seeing you,

I never use the Ecliptic Projector because I don’t see any use for it whatsoever.
If it was in 3D and showed your ship in relation to other objects then it would be very useful.
