I think that distance is to the asteriods surface, unfortunatly your targeting distance is to the center of the asteriod... go carefully within 2km of the roid

N.B. DONT MINE IN A HERC! Their bow is about 500-600m long . . . you'll smash into the asteroid before you can mine it!

If you have a forward firing mining laser then you can have the ship on autopilot without having to worry about hitting the roid.

Failing that, with a large roid (not the tunnels type) you should be able to get to a range of 1.4km and the laser will hit. You might need to get a bit closer but about 1.3km is the closest you want to be on manual flying. It can be tricky with some of the irregular shaped ones. You might need to strafe away and approach from a different angle.

The smaller roids are no problem. Mediums can be hit from around 600m and the tiny roids at around 300m.

If you're new to mining, save the game first if you're nervous. I use a demeter and autopilot and have no problems, except when I forget to switch autopilot on and realise that when I hear a big CLANG! I always have 75Mw of shields for that reason!
