Can we have a dynamic distance setting tied to FPS counter?
When entering overpopulated regions with large amounts of ships and stations, performance drops due to quantity of objects. Special script (which checks FPS, for example, every second) could quickly drop drawing and effects distance to minimum (0). When entering large empty zones this setting could gradually raise drawing distance to maximum (100), until we are closing to populated cluster of stations and ships. The game already have in-game FPS counter, and distance settings can be changed seamlessly without game reloading. Of course it can't help with background calculations of super large empires, but it's not the point of this. This could improve manual piloting experience.
