New Captain's Log
I lasted played X3 wow I don't know when. I bought all the games. Even X4 when it came out. Played for an hour and seemed too buggy. Here I am 4 years later.
This stuff might come easy for veterans...but worrying about xenon and khaak and whatever is big stuff for nubs like me.
After 8 hours in game time I finally figured how I can check for various missions. I am playing as terran protectorate, and using the map I finally see when I go near stations they offer missions. If I wasn't looking in the map just idling wondering what to do and see those icons and zoom in I'd never have known. Not reading any guides, just learning everything from scratch.
So I finally did enough to get a miner yay and had him mine silicon.

Re: New Captain's Log
I'm pretty sure one of the tutorial starts deals with missions.
If you're having trouble finding your way in X4, there is no shame to replay those tutorial scenarios or part of them to get your bearings.

Congratulations, and welcome back to the series! I hope to hear more of your adventures, trials, and triumphs.
THE HAPPINESS OF SEEING AGAIN THE SLIGHTLY DISGUSTING ALIEN FRIENDS. EXTREME DELIGHTFUL.

Some characters ingame might say something about something. Early on, the player log got "tips". The ingame encyclopedia fills as you encounter objects. And then there are tutorials. (I might have flown one of them.) Overall, if there are facts around, they are sparse and scantily clad. No hand-holding, most of the time.
There are things that every denizen of X Universe logically should know as they did grow up with those but the player obviously does not know. There are also things, that if told, spoil "exploration". I, for sure, can't tell where the line between those goes. The devs clearly "play it safe" or like writing documentation as little as I do.
An issue with "guides" (and not only for these games) is that they are based on what the author knew -- or assumed -- about the version of the game/thing that they wrote about. X4 has evolved with every patch. Some guides are good and apply even to current version. Some don't.

Re: New Captain's Log
I have a Katana now. I think i need some fighter escorts tho, the xenon can overwhelm me.

Re: New Captain's Log
The Katana is great. It can outrun every xenon ship. Just blast a couple of xenon fighters, thrust out before your shields get too low, wait for them to recharge while the xenon catch up to you, rinse and repeat.
Re: New Captain's Log
In the earlier X4 the NPC did chase with cruise speed and could never catch a faster ship (like Katana).
In current X4 at least the Xenon that have fallen far behind do use travel to catch up.
While they don't all boom in simultaneously, the swarm can nevertheless gather on you.
Although, Katana can boost out some and NPC Katanas seem to prefer the boom&zoom (but end up far out -- too much zoom).
I did conclude in X3 (X3R and X3TC/AP were no different) that NPC should not escort the player. X4 seems similar.
Have NPC wing, but have it do its own thing. Then either your wing or you serve as a distraction that lets the other do the killing.

Re: New Captain's Log
Being someone who got their first real taste of X through X3 Terran Conflict / Albion Prelude, I honestly get lost trying to score contracts - Never mind paid retainership via "Mission Subscriptions", I have trouble getting a single job. Took a beginner's money guide and I am slowly making a modest profit blasting crystals loose from asteroids, feels like my Energy Cell venture I was running in X3AP. What's the X equivalent of making money hand over fist with Cobalt in No Man's Sky, I wonder?
Re: New Captain's Log
No exploits like that in X4. X4's economy is actually simulated after all.
If trading is your thing, have a look at sectors that have a shipyard and/or wharf. Often there are supporting stations nearby that you can supply or supply the shipyards from.
Computronic Substrate has the highest possible profit margins per volume. Followed by Claytronics and Field Coils. Just remember to buy cheap and sell high.
