According to the following topic ..

viewtopic.php?f=180&t=441562

.. Someone found that :

1. High was resulting in jaggy shadow edges

2. Normal is selectable in the Config, by using 1 instead of 2 (2 equates previously to using the High setting), and is better currently than setting High

But Normal is still not selectable in game.

I know this is still marked "working as intended for now" .. But the ability to change shadow setting to 1 in the Config is new (as is High being Jaggy for some), so I wonder if there have been background attempts to change how this all works.

As of 6.0 Beta 1 ..

This bug report can be closed, no longer relevant because "Normal" Shadow setting is no longer an option

Seems like a strange way to fix a bug. Most modern games offer low / medium / high / ultra settings.

Yeah but going by Allan's reply earlier I think this is technically unsolveable without major changes, and right now they will want to focus on v6.0 betas stability before releasing the next DLC.

Personally I like the soft shadows in X4 better than regular shadows, they fill in the small areas nicely and seem to have a better visual effect than regular shadows.

But for the stability issue, they really need to make the game multithreaded but they already said that's not going to happen. Having all simulations on a single core is the bottleneck for most people and it's too bad because X4 could really
be a great multiplayer experience (ventures) if you could fully utilize all 4, 8, 16 cores.

Multithreading Handbook for Simulation Developers is an interesting read, as well as Multithreading for game engines (Vulkan guide) and Threading - NVIDIA PhysX SDK. I don't think it's impossible to make X4 multithreaded but it's so far along in development it would essentially be like writing a new game.

I'll cast my vote for X4 v7.0 to be the Multithreaded Update. No new content, just multicore/threading so you can play the game properly. Let the modders create the content for v7.0.

At this stage they should probably rename the settings down a tier to "Normal" and "High" instead of "High" and "Ultra". Even a GTX 760 could run "High" shadows.

X4 is multi threaded already.

Threading - NVIDIA PhysX SDK.
X4 as of 6.00 is moving to use the Jolt physics engine. That is fully multi threaded with very good multi-core scaling.

I am closing this topic since it has been revived from the dead multiple times already and now seems to be drifting off topic.
