[7.00 beta/6.20] The game is completely muted [Linux + Pulseaudio] - Workaround in OpenAL config.

Post by db48x » Thu, 4. Apr 24, 23:37

Ok, slightly clickbait: I fired the game up on April 1st and discovered that the sound wasn’t working; I was obviously still using 6.20 that day.

I’ve played ~350 hours, so I know that sound definitely worked a few months ago. In the mean time I changed my sound setup slightly: my speakers are plugged into a different computer, and I use a pulseaudio tunnel so that both computers can play sound at the same time through the same speakers if needed (obviously I can really only use one computer or the other at a time, so there are rarely two different sound sources in practice.) Everything else on my computer can play sound and music just fine; the problem is only X4. The tunnel is the default sound sink, so everything that plays sound uses it automatically.

I reset X4’s sound settings, so it is is to the “System default” sound device, default volumes, etc. Still nothing.

I don’t think I need to send you a save game, because it’s not relevant; there’s no sound in the main menu. Instead I’ll include the output of running `pactl list`, which shows all the loaded pulseaudio modules, the available sources and sinks, details of all connected sound clients, and available sound cards. You’ll see that I am currently playing Still Alive from the Portal sound track, but that X4 is not in the list (even though it is currently running). Apparently X4 is not even trying to play sound.

I play in English, and have no mods installed at the moment. Back when the sound worked, I did have mods, so I doubt that’s related.

Thanks!

Did you toggle on accident the "mute game" shortcut (ctrl+v - iirc)?
Try to see what it is mapped to in your controls menu and try toggling it. It might be just that.

Well, that’s easy to test. It’s going to be pretty funny if that’s all it was…

Nope, that didn't work. It’s “toggle sound” (took me a while to find it) and bound to shift-v. When it hit the the game says “Sound disabled”, which is no good. Hitting it again reenables the sound but still nothing comes out of the speakers. pactl still doesn’t show the game as a sound client, though it does show steam, the Gnome volume controls, etc, etc.

If you are use Linux so probably you have problem in system (after update pulse audio i bet).
So, game beta7.0 linux version works normal with audio. I have no issues on Fedora and sound throught bluetooth.
ps. check a thread with Linux support, someone had simillar issue.

I do use Linux. No, I clearly do _not_ have a problem “in system”, since everything can play audio except X4. So the problem is only X4.

However, you are right. I should have looked closer at the Linux support thread. It’s much too long to actually read, but it turns out that we can search it. That turns up a post blaming the version of OpenAL that X4 ships with. Editing OpenAL’s config file (`~/.alsoftrc`) fixed it. For future reference, here is the file I used:

Code: Select all

[general]
drivers = pulse,
This simply configures it to try playing via Pulseaudio, falling back to other options if that fails. Apparently newer versions of the library just do this automatically.
