[6.0 Beta 5][FEEDBACK] Cockpit Reflections - A bit bright? - Improved in b6.

Post by alt3rn1ty » Thu, 9. Mar 23, 22:39

Hi, feedback topic on the new Cockpit Reflections.
Is it just me or are they a bit bright in some circumstances?

Dont get me wrong I like them very much, but feel they could be a bit more subtle if they were maybe 66% the current brightness.

They are not so noticable in most sectors, but if you have a pure black sector thats when they are more in your face.

.. hmm, just had a look at the Kuraokami, those aren't so bad but still a bit bright ..

3. https://i.imgur.com/B8eD9Sq.png

Compairing 2 and 3 above, depends on the system you are in 2 being worse than 3, but I suppose it also depends on how close the windows are to the reflected items, bigger cockpit means the reflected items are further away from the glass of the cockpit and less in your face.

So I think the worst cases to test are going to be small cockpit ships.
I appreciate though that if the brightness on these is turned down too much we wont see them a lot of the time, especially in sectors where you see a lot of fog / space atmospherics which these reflections get lost in. imho they just need turned down a little bit :)

Re: [6.0 Beta 5][FEEDBACK] Cockpit Reflections - A bit bright?

Post by linolafett » Fri, 10. Mar 23, 09:47

I assume it is caused by the red glowing holographs in the cockpit of the ship.
I could tone the red glow down - making the reflection less bright.

I dont want to reduce the reflectivity globally, as it will then be less visible overall, in some cockpits then probably invisible.

EDIT: this was done, should look much, much better in the next beta.

A option was added to adjust the strength of the cockpit glass reflection.
With this you can even disable them entirely.

Cant find this option, where is it?

Here is an example of another ship, visibility obstruction is quite intense:

Hey everyone, I think my issue is the same but wanted to post anyway for incase its not.
When flying through certain sectors the reflection is unbearable.

Hi Linolafett

Using 6.0 Beta 6
Your toning down the red glow in Geometric Owl / Moreya is just right, even without touching the new global setting for "Cockpit Glass Reflections" :xenon:

Cockpit Reflections: Feedback /discussion

Post by gorgofdoom » Mon, 20. Mar 23, 20:57

I don't understand why cockpit reflections include the skybox. If anything, one would very rarely see any sort of reflection from outside a vessel as the light would first have to pass through the cockpit and then reflect off the interior of opposing glass and be intense enough to overcome much more intense local light sources. (a complex thing to process, i'll imagine)

If the skybox was going to be reflected it would usually be from an exterior point of view, though why render on the outside of a vessel if we're very rarely going to see such a reflection?

Imagine driving a car and seeing the road under you reflected off the windshield. :gruebel:

Reflections of the interior are great, though!

Option to reduce strength of cockpit glass reflections works, except found one sector where it doesnt work - "lasting vengeance". Even with settings set to 0, reflection is intense.

After flying around for a bit it disappeared, without me changing any setting.

I have to agree it doesn't make sense.

Someone called DirkGriffin made a post in my Cockpit Reflections feedback topic ..
viewtopic.php?p=5166612#p5166612
.. Have a look at the screenshots there.

My issue has been resolved (the over bright Moreya / Geometric Owl console reflections), and additionally the Devs have given us a very nice new setting to globally control the cockpit reflections ..

.. But why is the sky box / planets internally reflected ?

Looking at DirkGriffins posted screenshots the cockpit glass would need to be hinged at the top edge, and then the bottom raised up (open cockpit) by about 50 degrees to reflect the planet surface below the ship :gruebel:

Because there are limitations on how well we can fake reflections.
As long as we are using tricks to create reflections, edge cases like this will always appear.
This will only be solved with implementing pathtraced reflections - and we are probably years away from doing so.

I think the effect is weird somehow. Setting it to something like 10 is bearable, but only because it gets kind of dim.
