X3:FL 1.2 RC 1: only steam?

I must admit I find it unfortunate and a bit sad that such early updates/betas are nowadays only available for steam.
It's like actively working for and ensuring a monopopy. And those, always, will haunt one at a certain point.

Probably it is also kind of unfair to the other distributers.

What about offering an update patch players can manually install?
I am aware it is a bit even more work, especially since this is a fan-made addition, so I am definetly not "demanding" it in any way but it would be surely nice.

Whatever a monopopy is, that isn't it I think because it is very easy to distribute via steam, it ensures a large test base. The idea is probably that the beta is quickly and effectively tested and feedback gathered, so that development and release of a patch can be expedited. It likely wont be long before 1.2 is released and available.

Release versions will be available on all platforms, but we simply cannot afford the extra time required to make multiple versions of beta builds for different platforms.
