[X3TC] What kind of ship do you prefer to fight in?

Post by ItWasntMe » Fri, 24. Feb 23, 22:41

X3 Terran Conflict is certainly a bit more hard core then X3 reunion.

I attacked and captured one of Duke's dangerous meterial transporters and then tried to send it to a shipyard and it got most of the way through the sector and then was destroyed by pirates. So I jumped in to seek vengeance for the loss of a ship that was rightfully mine only to find a pirate M7 and a bunch of M3s. Sadly the battle didn't go well. I've got a Terran Cutlass (M3) but it was not enough for the job.

So I'm wondering: What kind of ship do you (or did you) prefer to fight in X3:TC? I'm kind of new to TC so I only have Terran ships at the moment but in X3 reunion I generally prefered the faster Split ships and normally used either a Mamba Raider(M3) or a Chimera(M3+).

In X2 I did learn to fly a Dragon. The M6 in X3R were quite different, but I flew a Dragon.
In X3TC I flew a Dragon. In X3AP I flew a Dragon. In X4 I fly a Dragon Raider.

That said, the opponent does matter. In X3R the Raptor was the assassin for big targets,
and I had Yaki M5, Mako (M4), and Chimera in it, since the BBS missions did require "ships".

X3TC introduced the M7, missile barrages, and the boarding. The TM class too; why have one
fighter when you can have couple more? I did start X3TC in Goner Ranger ... and never paid
real attention to the Terrans.

Being faster is a way to survive; you can keep distance and spread the enemy thin.

Yeah if I remeber rightly in X2 the M6s were fast but less maneuverable but still a capable ship. When I tried using a M6 in X3:R I found them to be slugglish and needed to rely in the turrets for most combat unless you are against something slow so I generally prefered a M3 which could out maneuver most ships unless you are against ion disruptors or PSGs. Then I got an M3+ which seemed to be pefect for most jobs. That said I was compensating for a lack of fire power at some points by using mass drivers and lots of ammo.

Yeah so it does seem to make sense to have a bunch of fighters to use depending on the situation or maybe fly a larger ship and use fighter escorts (assuming the AI does a decent job). It does seem to be true that no one ship will do all jobs and I think what I might do is find a mid range fighter so a fast M4 or M3 for general use and then have larger ships on standby to bail me out if it's needed.

I like using the Teladi Shrike. Lots of cargo space, decent hangar space, and excellent firepower for an M7. If M7s are out of your reach, the Vidar you get during the Terran plot is also nice. It's the only M6 with 10 forward facing guns.

Yeah cost is something I should have considered here (and also rep). I think the most I'm likely to be able to buy at the moment is an M3. That said there are a few interesting options in the M7 class, especially those with a hangar bay. the split panther looks like a good option slightly faster than shrike with a bigger hanger bay buy less cargo space which I'm not mega bothered about.

Cargo is something to consider if you plan on using the jump drive with your ship. 20 ecells per gate distance adds up real quick. The Panther is a great light carrier, but as a personal ship I find it lacking because it has no main battery like the Shrike does. So I have to rely on the computer to aim for me instead of taking shots myself.

Yeah that's a point. Sometime I forget how much jump energy the bigger ships use. 20 per sector will add up quickly plus you need to consider the space shields and weapons take up.

Edit: I have had this issue with paranid M3s in X3:Reunion. Great ships and PSGs can be fun in pirate sectors but if you haven't got the cargo space then it limits things a lot.

Depends how you want to "fly"

Vidar with a full loadout of 10 M/AM launchers is the best player dogfighter in the game despite being classified as an M6. Not to mention that it could also fire the big Terran missile that was bugged so output a lot more damage than it was supposed to  You just need to look after it until you get the PHQ. Then you can reverse engineer it and build MORE...

Hyperion is a great allrounder including the ability to run a tractor beam so you can move your mining stations around.

The Split and Paranid M7's were also enjoyable to fly when more firepower / shielding was required.

I've been flying the Vidar and it's pretty good at taking out M6s. A single Spectre missile will eliminate a Kha'ak cluster. I have been able to destroy a couple pirate M7s if I can either hide in a blind spot or turbo boost out of range while my shields recharge. The M/AM launchers use a lot of cargo space, so I've got 3 of them but I'm considering getting a fourth and carrying fewer missiles.

Yeah the Vidar seems to be a good option and is very tanky. It's a little on the slow side but tanks always are and it also is limited as to what weapons I can put in it. I've also been looking at the Split ships and kinda want the Split Tiger M7. Yeah the Paranid M7 is also a possiblity. What I'm thinking of doing is flying a faster ship most of the time and then jumping in the more tanky ships and jumping out while they take care of the bad guys.

For a general fighter I'm currently between the Cutlass and the Mamba Raider. The Cutlass is slower but shielded well with plenty of fire power but the Mamba is faster but doesn't have enough fire power for more than an M3. I also considered the Chimera but it seems a step down from the Cutlass with few upsides other than more flexibility with the guns. It's a few m/s faster but not enough to be worth it.

I have never really used missiles and I may have to start by the sound of things.

By late late late in the game I have been flying and staying in the Griffon, my personal base ship and carrier. For fighter, it probably has been the Vidar or Springblossum. 😎👍

Oh yes, I forgot all about the Springblossom. Get that if you want an M6 that's faster than your Mamba Raider. For an M3 that's pretty well shielded and also faster than your Mamba Raider, get the Spitfyre from the same people.
