[X2] Crash in Brennan's Triumph cutscene on better PC – SOLVED

Post by SpaceyTurkey » Thu, 1. Sep 22, 11:35

I'm unable to view the cutscene when entering sector Brennan's Triumph because game crashes, no matter what I did in order to fix this problem. I didn't have this problem on an old laptop though, but it appeared on way better PC. What I already tried in order to fix/bypass it:
  • approach sector from other gates.
  • launch game with compatibility settings for game's .exe;
  • launch game with lower monitor refresh rate (60 Hz) and using 4:3 resolutions;
  • launch game using dgVoodoo2;
  • launch game without "mov" folder;
  • launch game with "Alternative Video Playback" setting;
I don't know what else to do, solutions from any forums are useless to me.

My "problematic" PC:
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600;
  • HyperX Fury Black DDR4 8x2 GB 3200 MHz;
  • MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 12G OC;
  • MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk WIFI;
  • Windows 10 Pro.

What are the X2-related Windows Error Reports at the end of a recently run DxDiag text output?

Thanks. That is a very generic type of error report for the X2 exe that does little to identify the cause but the P7: c0000095 (Integer overflow exception code) usually (but not always) turns out to be a device driver issue affecting the gameplay loop.

Since it is a cutscene crash, I would mainly suspect either your graphics driver or sound driver. Try updating or reinstalling them from the relevant device manufacturers' update sites and see if the crash still happens.

If that doesn't help then could you please run a new DxDiag and upload the full text to a reputable free public fileshare site and post just the public sharing link in a post here? Then we can check your drivers and check for unhelpful codecs, etc.

Thanks and good luck.

I tried reinstalling, but it didn't have any effect, the problem is still here. So here's the DxDiag file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZRjJoM ... sp=sharing

Thanks again. There are no glaring issues in the DxDiag (ie no bad codecs) although you have a few more sound devices and their drivers working at the same time (some drivers are a bit dated) than you probably really need. Other than that, I really have no further ideas as to what the problem could be. Sorry.

Re: [X2] Crash in Brennan's Triumph cutscene on better PC – SOLUTION

Post by SpaceyTurkey » Fri, 2. Sep 22, 21:54

Finally, I found the solution! If you encounter this problem, then you need to use a program called Cpukiller3 in which you need to find optimal for you slow down factor and force "x2.exe" to run on first and only one core in the task manager.

Thanks for reporting back on this successful workaround. I'll let the devs know.

I found another one! ) I downloaded a DirectX8 > DirectX9 wrapper from GOG's discussion "X2 won't run using the dedicated graphics card (nVidia Optimus)", put it in the game's folder, then I did following actions in NVIDIA Control Panel for x2.exe:
  • created a resolution 1856x1392@60Hz (4:3);
  • enabled VSync;
  • limited FPS to 60.
In the end of this I choosed my custom resolution that I mentioned before in the game's launcher.
So, finally, I was able to see that damn cutscene. But everything wasn't perfect: Brett was trying to kill himself by ramming in the gate. Earlier I thought that was my ship, but it isn't. That's weird and I don't know what to do with this. I was playing the same save file as before.
