GPU Upgrade or wait?
I rebuilt most of my gaming PC (Ryzen 3600,32gb RAM) in 2020. The only thing that didn't get changed was the GPU a 6gb 1060 as the prices of the replacement at that time was a bit silly. The prices have come down a lot recently and the 2060, 3060 and 3060 ti are all available. The 2060 seems to be roughly the same price as a plain 3060 (£350 to £400) with the ti up to £100 more.
Mainly for 1080p but 1440 is the plan. Any suggestions or just wait for the 4060 ?

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
You can naturally look at benchmarks that cover all those models. Perhaps https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gp ... ,4388.html which seems to say that the 6GB on your 1060 was a smart move back in the day.
One can always wait forever, if the current hardware is "enough". I would not take the 2060 as it is only one generation from 1060.

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
I would say that the 2070 super or a 2070 card in general might be the way to go. the 4000 series might not be coming out yet, and probably will be delayed for a bit, plus they will use a lot more juice from what I read.
As for the 3000 line, maybe the 3070, while the 3060, might look to be a decent card as it has more vram, I would say the 3070 might be the better choice. However, the 2000 line is still probably the best series to date. As for RT (ray tracing) I feel that is a gimmick, not all games support it, and it can also lead to performance decrease.
My recombination would be to go for a 2000 series card.

Current msrp mark ups
https://youtu.be/oiE2mHky2Oc?t=103
40xx might have a much higher power draw? 40xx series will be a bit different.
Figure +10% fps for newer 40xx gpu vs older model? And a longer support window (+2 years, 30xx release in 2020) due to it being a new product.
3060 ti is much faster than the 3060 but the mark up is much higher.
Hows your power supply unit?
ryzen 5 3600 + 3060ti at max game settings - watch other youtube videos. Look at ram speeds, overclocks, temperatures, game settings, stuff maxing out at 100% usage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2Kfn6NJ-js
Can look at gamers nexus gpu benchmarks to see differences also. Can also do youtube videos x vs x video card.
https://youtu.be/3C-RoDtqdJ8?t=565
Only 4070, 4080 and 4090 models might be available in the fall? 4060 and other variations later?

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
Well, it seems that if you want to go for a 4000 series card, your looking at getting a new system. As the card will use PCIe 5, then again, 4 not been out for that long, and from benchmarks, PCIe 4 only make a 1% / 1.5% difference. And considering everything is going up, the extra power draw might not be a good thing for people who are trying to cut down on their bills.
So I don't think its worth waiting for a 4000 series card. Even if the performance improvements are going to be pretty big, but as the 4000 series is still based on leaks, its hard to get any real evidence.
Anyway, that is my view.

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
One line of thought is that the release of "next gen" could affect the availability and price of "current gen" items positively. Hence a reason to wait. Alas, has that ever happened? Well, if next gen has availability, then early adopter are likely to sell their used old gear? IFmatthewfarmery wrote: ↑Sun, 22. Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
Lets not forget there is a silicon shortage. So that will also effect how widely available the 4000 will be, and will effect prices. And also it going to need brand new hardware, new motherboard, new CPU etc. If your in the market for a new graphics card, then I would say get one now, rather then wait for the 4000 series.

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
Five months ago I upgraded my own 8-year old GPU (had been planning it for several months) which couldn't run new titles because of the age of the drivers- either they would start but freeze as soon as you tried to play the game itself or refuse to start at all. I went for an RTX3060 from Ebuyer, cost me more than I'd originally budgeted but it runs like a dream, even it struggles if it has to display a huge complex with miles and miles of tubes though

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
Unfortunately, i think it will have to be postponed as our fridge freezer packed up last week, so the money earmarked for a GPU has been spent on a new fridge. (The old one did last for 17 years though.) Thanks for all responses.

On a brighter note, you'll have some awesome cooling to hand when you do get your new card.Redvers Ganderpoke wrote: ↑Tue, 31. I have an almost-new 1660 sat in my previous I7 PC which is just gathering dust, but I'm not sure if that's any better than your current card.
“Man, my poor head is battered,” Ed said.
“That explains its unusual shape,” Styanar said, grinning openly now. “Although it does little to illuminate just why your jowls are so flaccid or why you have quite so many chins.”
“I…” Had she just called him fat? “I am just a different species, that’s all.”
“Well nature sure does have a sense of humour then,” Styanar said. “Shall we go inside? It’d not be a good idea for me to be spotted by others.”

I'll post a picture of my in fridge gaming setup later.
Thanks for the offer but I think performance of the 1660 and 1060 are roughly about the same.

Man, F*** the GPU, that must have been a damn good freezer that lasted 17 years.Redvers Ganderpoke wrote: ↑Tue, 31. One more year and it could get married.

Pah, our other freezer was bought in 1997. It's still going strong (demoted to the garage and has a "hand crafted" aluminium handle as the old plastic one snapped.)

Gpu prices have decreased.

Hi Folks
Hope y'all getting along ok
Graphics Cards!....I also just took a peek at a few prices as I'm still gaming on my MSI GeForce GTX1060 3 GB
Geforce 2060 roughly around the £300 mark, 3060Ti about £450, 3080 £750-£800, and the 3090 over £1000...(I'm starting to feel faint just looking at the prices).
I think my desktop computer gaming is sadly coming to it's end, just amazed at how expensive everything is nowadays.
Do modern games look and play much better than they did 5 years ago?....well, what I mean is to warrant the current prices of GPU's.....and possibly other hardware.
Ah well, times change

Re: GPU Upgrade or wait?
I think 3060 Ti is best value for the money. I got it and am very happy with mine. It replaced a 1060 6 GB card that worked fine, but could not adequately power my VR headset (Quest 2).
I never buy the super top of the line stuff, I find that spending the extra money tends to deliver only marginal gains for a lot more cost. Plus extra hidden costs like the need to buy a top line PSU to power the beefy GPU, and extra electricity costs.

Most people still have some sort of 1060 gpu. Lots of people have ~equivalent cards or even older cards. Over 40%? Might make it more likely that developers still keep mid/lower end cards in mind when developing games. Can usually play around with settings to get games to run at 1080p 60 fps. There's also other stuff to help games run better.
4000 series might be delayed due to oversupply of 3000 series and lower cards? Lower tier 4000 tier cards might be released after the 4090, 4080?

Hi Falcrack
(I'm toying with building up another computer, I can use the same case (Coolermaster Haf X) maybe the PSU's, but I'm looking at a new motherboard (maybe Intel), new ram and CPU. present CPU is i5-3570K).

...I've got a Corsair HX 850 W in one Comp. plus a Corsair AX 850 in the other. Are these PSW's still powerful enough for GPU cards like the 3060ti's and possibly the 4000's ?

My PC, which was prebuilt, came with a 650W PSU , i512600K and 3060 Ti. I've not had any problems.Oldman wrote: ↑Fri, 29. Jul 22, 17:23Hi Falcrack

850w should be fine. I think the power spikes with the 3000 series was the only concern.Oldman wrote: ↑Fri, 29. Jul 22, 17:23Hi Falcrack

The new components seem to use a lot more power and the cpu might need more cooling if you are running the cpu under stress.
There's also the cpu ihs (integrated heatsink) warping/cooling (?) issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYU1OskbY-Q
You might also have to upgrade your cooler. Quite a few of the cpus pull 230W under artificial load. Much less when gaming. If you do video editing via the cpu it might effect you. Can undervolt a bit also to save power and produce less heat. Lga 1700 has different cpu cooler mounting holes. Some mainboards have 2 sets of holes so can avoid that and you could also buy an adapter bracket if needed. ~$7 usd or free?
If leaks are true the raptor lake intel cpus might receive a benefit from more expensive ddr5 vs ddr4. Release date/announcement might be Oct 17, 2022. 700 series mainboards might be a bit different? Already talks about ddr6 and even windows 12. Might end up being a mess.
