X3AP.exe Steam file - virus detected

Post by alexalsp » Sat, 4. Sep 21, 08:01

Good afternoon. Steam X3AP file, antivirus is triggered (Malwarebytes Premium). According to the website virustotal determines:

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/ac5 ... /detection

Maybe it's not a problem, but the game crashes due srabotyvaniya antivirus

I checked other files: x3tc.exe x3fl.exe and nosteam to them, they are clean. Only the x3ap.exe file frm steam is problematic.

It happens now and again.

It is almost certainly a false positive detection if the file came directly from Steam, but if you are still concerned then run the Steam game installation verification tool for both X3AP and X3TC to check for corrupted or altered game files.

I did it and even downloaded everything over the new one. It was triggered on Steam AP, the rest of the files are normal. :)

Then it is 99% likely a false positive detection. As AVs update and evolve, they may start to detect even brief portions of code that were maybe once used in a different way in malware and treat them as if they are the entire malware code itself. They have to walk a tight balance between missing malware because their checks are too coarse, and getting too many false positives because their checks are too sensitive to even quite minor similarity detail.

In this example, if the file in question has not been changed on Steam for a while now then you may wonder why your AV has only just now started to detect it as suspect.
