[7.0 Beta 1] Problem Talking to NPC's

Hi,

No save for this, as that won't reproduce it - at least, it doesn't for me.

Basically, sometimes I go to talk to an NPC and they're unresponsive, like my click to "Talk" simply isn't acknowledged at all. This is most common after I've just interacted with them. For example, I might have asked a Pilot of mine to give me their collected Inventory Wares. They'll do this just fine. I'll check what they've given me, then go to talk to them again and they're unresponsive. Waiting ten seconds or so usually sees them responding again. Another example might be the Faction Reps. I "receive rank" and let them do their speech. Once done I want to talk to them to buy a Blueprint and they're unresponsive. I wait ten seconds or so and now they're responding again.

Note: that I ALWAYS get "Talk" pop-up when looking at them, it's simply that clicking to actually talk does nothing...until it does, a few seconds later. Very minor problem, but irksome none the less.

It sounds as though the game has a queue of things to do or inputs to process at that moment. For that reason, a save made as the problem first happens may give the devs an idea of what is contributing to the issue even if the problem eventually goes away on loading it. Also a link to a DxDiag would be handy for referencing any likely system hardware/driver/peripheral contributions. Thanks.

I've had this happen in 6.x too when I try to pick up an NPC for a taxi mission. Save/reload always clears it so there seems to be some sort of lag happening that causes the CUE to generate the conversation not to work.

I suspect this might be one of those issues that a Save / Reload cycle prevents from happening again. Had it happen again last night - I was just going to buy a BP. Interestingly, I've found that often simply double-clicking on the NPC, rather than the usual single-click, will see them respond. It's not 100% guarranteed, but if a single-click sees them fail to respond, a double-click just might elicit a response from them.

Note: this issue seems to be almost exclusive to faction reps for me. I can generally reliably chat to crew (usually Pilots) on my ships for example. The one exception being, which I've raised as a separate issue, the Captains on Phoenix E's.

This issue persists in v7.0 release. I'd suggest it's actually worse. There's no direct re-creation steps, as loading a save from just before it happening seems to stop it happening.

Current example: I got my first promotion ceremony with ARG in a fresh start. It took many attempt to actual get the dialogue to appear.

The only way to attempt to recreate this, is to simply go around trying to talk to NPC's - both from other Factions and those working for the player - eventually the issue will occur.

This issue still persists, the work-around has changed though. Rather than needing to double-click a non-responsive NPC to get the dialogue options to appear, I now have to click and hold. Go figure lol.

This is happening to me with taxi missions. Cannot provide a save as exiting to the main menu an reloading fix the problem.

This is the issue, there's no way to reproduce it other than go and interact with lots of NPC's. Having started again fresh with the v7.0 and Timelines release, I've been getting it frequently when talking to reps for Promotion ceremonies. I get it less with regular NPC's and can usually talk to my crew (hand me your inventory) just fine. I cannot tell if some other activity I'm doing is delaying things. However...

Considering if you spend time in the Map screen, messages can be delayed quite some time, I wonder if that "buffer" is perhaps impacting NPC dialogue interactions too? The message delay occurs when events - that triggers messages of course - happen while the player is in the map screen. If they remain in the map screen for some time - I do, lots to manage as my Faction grows - I'll then get a stream of outdated messages in the lower-left panel, and even event log entries can be much delayed. I get messages about Pirate harassment of one of my ships, minutes after I've already responded to the Video message for example.

Regardless of the cause, rather than double-clicking the NPC, click and hold now reliably triggers their dialogue after a short delay when a regular single-click does not.

This is starting to sound more like input lag.

I've had this issue since the 4.x versions. Often it will happen if I go to a trader's corner but the NPC isn't there. If I wait long enough, they will slowly materialize but I can't talk to them. But most often it happens when I am trying to pick up a passenger. In any case, my game is usually lagging by this time. If this workaround of "click+hold" is successful, it seems to me like there is some kind of race condition causing input lag.

Could be, but game performance is otherwise fine, no evidence of slow-down at all. It does however generally happen when trying to talk to a Faction Rep - either for a rank-up ceremony or just buying Blueprints - and such places are generally high traffic areas.

I do spend a lot of time in the map screen, and this definitely causes the message lag issue to get worse, so the two may well be linked. With no reliable "just load this save" repro case, the only way to find it will likely be to play the game, fly / teleport between faction reps and talk to them - all the while the devs can have whatever background tools they using running to trap the issue. Not sure what more can be done our side. Of course, if I DO ever manage to reproduce it reliably from a save, I'll upload it here.

I have somewhat a pattern that does cause this/similar issue.

I will not get an activation control (no option to talk to the NPC) somewhat prdictably when doing the following sequence:

- several (3+) ships with collected inventory drops
..often I am doing this with ships all located in the same sector on docked on a mothership. Will also happen if they're active/flying.

- player teleport to the ships one by one collecting the inventory from the pilots
..sometimes will use SHIFT+D to move among ships on the same dock, issue will surface either way AFAIK.

A majority of the time one of the pilots will not allow me to talk with them. I'll then take command of the ship, get up and they come back and will talk once the standby pilot has ship control again.


This has the same smell as the teleport + station elevator/trader's corner issue where the elevator can't be activated.
