If you are playing on hard mode, which I am, then "Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses", which would rule out your suggestion. Also, in many cases, such a strategy could potentially burn through just as many guesses to find that last single letter as simply trying out the different words that use the possible letters for that position.
