Re: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
Question to Americans, because I couldn't belive what I read:
Aparently in Nevada, there was a large number of invalid votes...coz Gen Z can't do handwritten sing on a ballot.
The explenation was that due to Common Core State Standards for English, handwriting wasn't a necessary part of curicullum for many schools since 2010.
How is that possible?
How students make notes?
or is it all just books and ABCD test and tickboxes?
Edit:
Clarification - aparently it was 10k ballots in Clark County, Nevada - 10k votes out of 920k casted.
Seems like it was more of a clickbait drama than huge illiteracy epidemic.

I think you (and the guy in your link) hit the nail on the head, so I won't waste time repeating it.Chips wrote: ↑Wed, 6. To say they're fooled into voting for him, I'd say that's fair, because they are fools, and that's the nicest thing that can be said about them.
Do you think that made anyone vote?
e.g. for example, this guy may well have just hit the nail on the head.

We're assuming they consume and partake in media, full stop. We think all the negative news that *we* read and consume and go "OMG what on earth..." - they don't listen to it, don't care about it, it's not important - or worse, aren't remotely aware of it.
What's important to them is what their pockets show... and research appeared to show that the presidential debates historically (on TV) made no discernible impact upon the actual vote, implying they're not really doing anything. So it's not what they're basing their votes upon.
The democrats failed to identify what their voting public (or *more* of their voting public) really cared about. All sorts of ideological ideas are talked about, which is great... but that's not what the voters they *needed* to vote for them cared about.
Which is themselves; their wallet - and who damages it. Whether that's their perception of Govt or immigrants.
Another thing I've seen the Democrats do since the 2016 election is play the blame game instead of trying to look into the reasons why people would vote for someone who is so obviously unqualified (and dangerous, and an embarrassment) to be president. And on the few occasions when they do seem to be trying to understand what happened, their answer is always followed up by an insult ("the uneducated white man did it", "racists did it", "misogynists did it"), instead of looking at themselves to see what they might be doing wrong.
Back in 2016 people yelled that Trump lost the popular vote. Trump only lost the popular vote by 2% ........ while completely ignoring the popular vote and focusing on the Electoral College. I blame the Democrats as much as I blame Trump, the writing has been on the wall for years and they ignored it.

It's a case of misrepresenting truth in another attack on people/education (as in where it originated from is doing it, not you) - aka "LMGTFY" for a source that may be clearer.mr.WHO wrote: ↑Wed, 6. Nov 24, 17:46 Question to Americans, because I couldn't belive what I read:

As far as I could determine, handwriting was always part of the curriculum - however, CURSIVE was removed as a requirement in the 2010. Prior to then it *was* a requirement. So they had to learn how to read/write cursive as well as just ... erm, what do we call it? Typed font?!For many of today’s young adults, having a consistent signature isn’t much of a necessity – until it comes time to vote. That’s proving a problem when counting ballots in some states. Thousands of voters in Nevada — many of them young — still need to verify their signatures on mail-in ballots before they can be counted by the Nov. 12 deadline, Nevada’s top election administrator said Tuesday. Signatures on mail-in ballots must be matched against a signature on file at county registrars’ offices.
Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar (D) said that since the passage of automatic voter registration in the state — where a digital signature created when a person applied for their driver’s license is linked to their online voter registration — “more Nevadans than ever sign their names on digital screens that may look different than their pen-to-paper signatures.”
Young people especially “may not have a set signature developed yet,” Aguilar said in an emailed statement.
...
...
“I live in California where everyone receives their ballot in the mail. And for years now, more than 3 percent of ballots have been rejected because the signatures don't match,” Cleaver said in a phone interview. “It is a problem at scale.”
The issue is exacerbated, she said, because “the people who are determining that signatures don't match aren't expert in handwriting analysis.”
She worries that in a tight race, rejecting votes because of invalid signatures could be viewed cynically as a “deliberate attempt to suppress youth turnout.”
Aguilar said the need to fix or “cure” rejected ballots is not just an issue for Generation Z voters.
Some older voters may sign their names differently throughout their lives, he said, and recently married voters may not have updated their name on their voter registration.
Aguilar said his office is sending text alerts because young people tend not to answer their phones and are more difficult to reach. Nevada state officials reported that 12,939 ballots had already been successfully cured.
“It’s exciting that so many people are participating in the democratic process,” Aguilar said. “We are a battleground state and races could be close up and down the ballot — every eligible Nevada voter deserves to have their vote counted and voice heard, and signature verification is an important security check in the voting process.”

Re: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
Now that the election is over, I will break my silence on this forum to briefly weigh in with my opinion on the results.
It is no secret that I supported Kennedy from the beginning. Alas, the Democrat machine, did everything it could to suppress Kennedy's run and left him with no option, but to abandon his quest and join forces with Trump.
Unfortunately (for the Democrats), Harris was always a bottom of the barrel choice (not that we had a choice). That, on top of Democrats having become the party of censorship and war mongering, left me and many other liberals, with little recourse but to vote Republican this time around.
It is now my hope that Trump will position Kennedy to administer oversight of the American health system, which is sorely needed. Likewise, I'll be interested to see if Elon Musk can be put to good purpose in reducing government waste and inefficiency. On the international stage, it is my hope that Ukraine will finally see the writing on the wall, admit defeat and save whatever remains of their country.
It is good that this was a landslide victory, leaving little to contest.

What do you hope he does with the health system?
As for Ukraine, I'd definitely disagree with the idea that they should be forced to subjugate to "save their country". What do you think Russia has done to civilians in captured areas?
Also, for anyone/everyone - here is Owen Jones (who is pretty left wing) reporter for the Guardian with a quick brief analysis... (should be free to read for anyone).
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ala-harris
The voters I spent time with were energised by the president-elect’s messages. By contrast, Harris had no clear vision and no shared rage at the state of the country.
Of all the factors that catapulted Trump back into the White House, one looms large over others. Just a quarter of Americans are happy with the way things are going in their country. Kamala Harris was seen by many as simply continuity Joe Biden, a president who has long had a negative approval rating. When asked last month what she would have done differently from Biden, Harris answered: “There is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of – and I’ve been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact.”
There was no clear vision, no shared rage with the American people at the state of the country: if there was anything deeply wrong with the US, her campaign seemed to suggest, it was the existence of the Trumpist movement, and voting for Harris could finally turn the page on that.

Whew. I was worried about what I'd find in here.
I'm very glad to see that at least X isn't corrupted by the stupidity and brainwashing of Trump. Another great reason to love this game and community!
(Even if some people are a bit vicious or unruly at times. It just shows they care.
)
As I'm out of ranting energy, since I've ranted enough about this whole debacle enough, I'll just type out a mini-rant/snarky comment.
Imagine voting for the person who literally incited a bunch of people to try to dismantle our democracy, kicked off the whole inflation issue by signing a bunch of Covid stimulus checks, which people blame Biden for...? Is a literal felon, and therefore shouldn't even be able to be president, and did a bunch of other undesirable things, is clearly crazy and mentally unstable, and acts like a child. Oh, and he didn't even really follow through on his promises last time too.
What a crazy thought, huh?
...Wonder what sort of stupid and atrocious things he'll do this time?

Well I tell ya, I'm surrounded by the MAGA morons where I live. Even in my on family, if you recall from a previous post. Their TVs are on Faux News 24/7. You mention anything that contradicts what they've been told they fly into a rage. Now I can't realistically sample 70 million people but what I have seen doesn't show any thoughtful, meaningful, debate or ideals, or frankly, any sibilance of conscious thought.Chips wrote: ↑Wed, 6. By contrast, the orange one railed against immigrants and threatened to turn the military against the "enemy within" (American Citizens), and threats of executions, deportations, and/or arrests of people that anger the orange one when he wasn't deep throating a microphone or swaying to music.
Let's not forget he has a "concept of a plan" for this "Big Beautiful Healthcare" plan he was supposed to produce 10 years ago. Point is, other than racism, he had no platform.
Lets also take a moment to consider what that guy was saying. Harris was wrong for calling out his cult, but that dude's vulgar behavior and threats are okay? Double standard much?

Re: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
You seem to be missing the point everyone is making in analysing the loss...
You can't see past what *you* understand; don't see what *they* understand. The reality is the majority of Americans (he won the popular vote) have voted for Trump. That's just a cold hard fact.
So your options are to think that everyone who voted Trump is wrong, idiot, thick, nazi, fascist, insert other insult - or instead of just reducing them with insults (as that's the easy option) - that the *most* important thing(s) for them wasn't being addressed by Harris; or not effectively, at least.
The entire "75% aren't happy with the state of the country" coupled with "Harris is seen to offer more of the same" should indicate something alarming. Or should have. But it wasn't... or if it was, it was really underestimated.
By all means, it's everyone's fault for being dumb. As Jonathan Pie pointed out in 2016 that's *precisely* why the USA ended up with Trump in the first instance. As said by the commentators who supported Harris this time around, it's why it's happened *again*. People can continue to bury heads in the sand and fail to learn, consider, reflect - just blame. Failed in 2016, failed in 2024. It's going well.
Or perhaps it's time to take a step back. They're "fellow" citizens, and they're now in the majority... instead of resulting to yet more insults and accusations, perhaps start thinking of ways to redress/address, or appeal to a wider base; to argue more effectively (despite as previously saying, perhaps they're no even engaging!). I didn't observe her whole campaign, so all this is *highly* based around the views of commentators and not personal (so there's that caveat
)
I'm sure people will say apparently her policies should have... but they didn't, or failed to connect. That's a democrat failing. And for that, we (they) now have Trump...

And you seem to be missing my point. They're not open to anything that doesn't come from Faux News or their overlord. They were fed lie upon lie upon lie but they hold it to be fact and truth without question (verifiable lies at that). Even if i bought into their make-believe world, there's nothing that can be done to address their grievances because they aren't real, if they would even listen. I take great exception to this. Trumpanzies don't get to dig a pit and then complain because I'm not following them in. I don't care if they're the majority or not. I'm not about to reach out to someone who ordained that I am their enemy because I didn't agree with them. They started this Us vs Them BS and I'm not about to be the sucker that gets his hand bit when he reaches out to a mad dog. They sure as hell didn't reach out to us when they weren't the majority.Chips wrote: ↑Wed, 6. Nov 24, 20:34 Or perhaps it's time to take a step back. Re: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
That is correct. (Assuming I'm reading that right. I had to double check you mean what I think before I posted this.)
As you can tell, I'm very much against Trump. To make it short, let's just say I don't appreciate some of the things he's done, and I'm not sure how some people just sort of overlook that stuff.
I guess, to go to the core of my disdain, and general opinion of him running the country, I'm not confident in whether he's the right person to be President. So far, from what I've seen, or from my point of view, more accurately, he seems to have caused the country to go into a not very good place. (And to be fair, I will say that Biden didn't really help our situation, and I'm also not saying that Kamala would've magically fixed things either. Just that I think that she'd be less likely to cause issues, and would thus be better in my opinion, and I did vote for her because of that.)
Admittedly, I don't watch too much political stuff, as it's very tiring, so I may be getting quite a bit wrong here, or being way too opinionated rather than factual on some things. However, again, from my point of view, Trump caused a bunch of issues, and I don't want him to cause more, so I don't want him to be president again.
Of course, the election appears to be decided, so what's done is done. (Though, it technically is a possibility that Kamala can still win, the Electorate College will just have to vote for Kamala instead of Trump, which is effectively impossible.)
I may not like Trump, and I may be very displeased with the result, but Trump won fair and square, (I hope, anyways.) so I hope he'll be a good president, and fix the issues in our country. Oh, and hopefully JD Vance will too, though he seems to be a little more off the rails than Trump.
Anyways, that's enough politics for one day. Hopefully the coming years will be better than the ones before.

Re: U.S. Presidential Election 2024
Watch the first 6 minutes of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U4QZeYmtm0
Really watch it, listen. Take it all in. Understand that this is what the reality of this man is (he is the R word, censored on this forum).
To be clear. I understand entirely why some people vote for the party and its history, I understand feeling ostracized, attacked and disenfranchised by the 'new left' (I am an 80s/90s leftist, not a mentalist), I don't hate Elon Musk, far from it. But to have this guy get 51% of the vote? ..... I have no words. I have long held the opinion that people are stupid, not individuals, but people en-masse, especially americans. This is a case in point.
To me, the true loser here is the climate (therefore life on earth in general). Trump can allow companies to drill or frack or whatever within the US, but the true damage will be to international efforts. As I said before people en-masse are stupid, to rally them to a cause is very difficult, this single decision by Americans (as a half-latino I dont want to use that word because I too am american, but you know what I mean) is going to set-back international efforts to find ways to stabilize our planet by decades.
As for Musk, I think thats just a publicity stunt. I personally have little ill-will against him, even though he has become increasingly weird over the years but as a person that has seen him speak at length on many issues I think his heart is in the right place. And listen to Trump at 16:37 in the video I linked, he is a complete imbecile, and Elon Musk knows this....

Kennedy is an excellent pick. I too hope he is able to do what he wants to do, and that is hold the world of science to account. Science is not a religion, you dont 'trust science' (it was anathema to me to hear this during covid (and my position was clear on these forums too) from my own family who are less knowledgeable than me about these subjects), science must prove it is worthy of our trust through evidence at all times and thats what Kennedy wants. Kennedys heart is in the right place and he is pragmatic and critical thinking (if you actually listen to him and dont just absorb headlines about him). For the record, Observe, to me it is such a shame that Kennedy was forced to do what he did. What Trump says at 13:43 in the video I linked directly to Kennedy should show to anyone with a brain how different Kennedy is to Trump.Observe wrote: ↑Wed, 6. Alas, the Democrat machine, did everything it could to suppress Kennedy's run and left him with no option, but to abandon his quest and join forces with Trump.
It is now my hope that Trump will position Kennedy to administer oversight of the American health system, which is sorely needed. Likewise, I'll be interested to see if Elon Musk can be put to good purpose in reducing government waste and inefficiency.

Well here's the big problem with your anti-vaxer nut job. If you don't wanna get a vaccine, fine, don't. That's your choice. But Kennedy isn't qualified to issue bandaids, much less run the government's health services. Those of us that want to live don't need your anti-vaxer bs forced upon us. Furthermore, an already broken healthcare system doesn't need to be further ruined by this moron. He's no different than the demon-sperm doctor with whatever medical knowledge and experience he has. Just because he's been to a doctor, that doesn't make him one. Don't forget, this whack job claimed covid was engineered to be less effective on Jews and Asians, so ya know... awesome to have more of that R word shit in positions of authority.
And Musk's heart is in the right place? With all the antisemitic and racist bs he's been spouting, that guy's heart is in the right place? Really?

It’s like, people can do whatever they want with their own health decisions, but it’s when they start pushing that onto everyone else that things get tricky. And yeah, some people just love to stir the pot with wild ideas that don’t help anyoneVertigo 7 wrote: ↑Thu, 7. Nov 24, 06:23 Well here's the big problem with your anti-vaxer nut job.
