Re: Russia-Ukraine War

Post by fiksal »

Russia continues to use words without understanding their meaning, intentionally or not.

I am starting to think, that's a tell for fascism.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66919358
Erik Mose, chair of the commission, said there was continuing evidence of war crimes including torture, rape and attacks on civilians.

A separate report two weeks ago by the UN's special rapporteur for Russia, Mariana Katzarova said the human rights situation in Russia had also "significantly deteriorated", with critics of the invasion subjected to arbitrary arrest, torture and ill treatment.

...

Its core pitch is that Russia would use its membership "to prevent the increasing trend of turning the HRC into an instrument which serves the political will of one group of countries". It said it does not want that group "punishing non-loyal governments for their independent and external policy".

Russia was suspended from the Human Rights Council in April 2022 with 93 members of the UN general assembly voting in favour, 24 against and 58 abstaining. In its position paper, Russia blames "the United States and its allies" for it losing membership.
the key here that as often been the case, the true motive is not hidden. It's not about improving the situation but to specifically to leverage the UN to its political purposes.

It's not anything surprising, I get it, but things need to be said out loud.

UN needs to find a way to not have Russia there at all. Surely bureaucracy can find a way with time

I do not get what you want to say. You don't want RU in the UN or HRC? Or should it lose the veto right?

My opinion is that all countries must be represented in the UN and HRC. And the veto right should be abolished for everyone.

It is ridicolous, that there are a few countrys that can block the majority.

PS: I am not sure if a veto in an voting about HRC membership is possible.

In this context, I would say Russia should not rejoin HRC.

What all the things that UN does is a bit hazy to me, so I am not sure what's better - for Russia to not be there at all or to not have the veto power.

I suppose the later makes sense, and perhaps it makes sense for everyone not to have the veto power .

is it Wagner plane?

also that's how Russian planes land now. The next step, there will come an excavator that will cut up what's left into pieces.

Sooner or later, someone will try put cruiser turret on MT-LB :)

Looks like France and Ecowas are just leaving Niger and hoping the country falls apart.

No one is really sure if Russia's black sea fleet commander is dead or not. It's beginning to be quite comical. They might have propped his dead body up on a bed with a pillow to make him look alive even though he didn't move or talk. A video of a photo? They might have also used a video recorded earlier to prove he was alive. No one seems to be certain.

I think he's alive, there is a video interview posted where he is asked about the missile attack

Honestly it would be a lot better for Ukrainians to say "I don't know" than to confidently assert they had got their main target only to be later proven wrong.

To be fair though, all it takes is one official prematurely shooting off their mouths for the media to run with the story saying that Ukraine had claimed to kill him. I don't think they had officially confirmed his death before announcing it.

according to BBC they only said
The Ukrainian military statement on Saturday asserted that it had left "dozens of dead and wounded occupiers, including the top management of the fleet".
maybe they said more since, maybe someone less official said more.

splitting hairs I think a bit.

top command was attacked, some people died. They should have stayed home, in Russia

grim success

Might be false news or inaccurate? Tehran/Iran drone factory on fire? Can't seem to see info in the news yet or it might just not be true.

Who knows - could be an old footage or manipulated (it's not like we don't have wide spread AI generated voices and videos already).

Unless he appear on live TV, it's anybody guess.

it's crazy that what was shown is so unclear. Why do they even bother?

If he is dead, I don't think pro war crowd actually cares.

Looks like Republican Kevin McCarthy has become the first speaker of the house in history to be removed. Might cause some larger issues.

Part of the reason some Republicans voted for removal, was because they reject continued Ukraine funding, which McCarthy supports. That was not the only reason and there is still a majority in the House who favor spending more money on the war, but that majority in House is dwindling and is already below 50% among the general public. I hope Zelensky is thinking about an end-game short of military victory, because I don't think Ukraine can depend on U.S. money or weapons beyond 2024, if that long.

yet that's only 8 Republicans vs 210 Republicans

and apparently 8 is all it takes to remove a Republican speaker

American politics are fun
McCarthy’s 269-day reign as speaker was ended by a 216-210 vote, a move that has no marker in modern history and paralyzes Congress for the time being
...
The lawmaker led a group of eight Republicans who voted to remove the speaker, joined by 208 Democrats who at times giggled at the GOP’s infighting

on the matter of the war, I think Ukrainians have a plan.
I am still betting on collapse of Russia before defeat of Ukraine, which is no longer possible.

not too make my post much longer, but that's best for everyone, including Russia

If US will take its leave then someone else will lead. On that matter it's maybe not the worst idea, US leadership is spotty
