Asteroid stuck INSIDE mining ship. It could not autopilot and so npc's could not steer it.

Post by GooseJac »

I did finally find the asteroid, it took me forever, but after reading other threads here and on reddit I went out in the spacecuit and while hugging the ship, found a spot where I could somewhat clip through and very slowly mine the asteroid with the laser.

All in all it took me around 1-2 hours and kinda ruined my night. I dread the fact that other mining ships (or any other, for that matter) could come across this issue and without me knowing, be limping out there at 13 km/h until I finally see it and have to fix it manually.

Anyways. Here my savefile, hopefully this gets fixed.

This is not an issue for mining ships if they are not nearby the player or where the player is looking. Generic asteroids are only simulated in high attention levels. Simply leaving the area usually fixes this sort of issue for such ships.

If the problem is with the player ship getting stuck then the easiest solution is to teleport to another ship far away and let the captain fly the ship a bit so that when the player teleports back in, it is no longer inside an asteroid. Before unlocking the teleporter you either need to smash the asteroid, or consider reloading a previous save.

I actually tried just about everything except for this, hah. I tried warping away with the ship, but I didn't warp the ship away from me. Good to know that this won't affect far away miners. Still, this is still an issue that should be fixed imo.

A possible workaround.

Stand up so relief pilot takes over.
Over the ship to fly somewhere else through the map.
Stream view from another area.

This SHOULD force your ship into OOS behavior, which would let it fly out. Not guaranteed to work.

Actually, ship weapons should be able to damage asteroids regardless of where they hit, even if you're inside. Normally, the laser or projectile should strike the outer wall of the asteroid and cause damage. Unless JoltPhysic messed up and allows shots to pass from the inside to the outside without colliding.

Of course, mining lasers do the most damage. But even the pulse laser does damage, even if it's not much.

The asteroid was inside the ship. There was not way for the ship weapons to hit it.

Yes, the OP had suffered an internalised version of this. What is interesting though is that it was supposed by now to have been prevented from happening (to the ship exterior at least).

Sneaky sneaky asteroid, probably looking for a passenger opportunity and realised too late that its mass was overloading the drives

Normally you teleport to another ship in another sector. This approach assumes you can't teleport yet.

I cannot yet indeed. So this is very good to know.
